SUBJECT: Public Works Week Proclamation
Meeting Date: May 12, 2026
RECOMMENDATION:
The City Council consider proclaiming the week of May 17 – May 23, 2026 as National Public Works Week in the City of Commerce.
BACKGROUND:
Since 1960, the American Public Works Association (APWA) has encouraged communities and government agencies at all levels to celebrate the hard work and dedication of the many public works professionals throughout North America who provide, operate, build, and maintain our essential services such as water, refuse, sewers, streets, trees and public facilities.
This year’s theme is “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community”.
Public works professionals are considered the "unsung heroes" and the backbone of a community, working tirelessly behind the scenes to maintain infrastructure that is essential to daily life. They operate as a "boots on the ground" team, serving residents by ensuring the proper operations of water systems, roadways, sanitation, and public spaces. From the road we drive on to the water we drink, this workforce is constantly striving to do their best and possesses a strong sense of duty, aiming to improve community safety and quality of life from their first day on the job, a tradition of service that continues to the present day.
Public Works staff work around the clock; they attend to emergency situations, day or night, rain or shine. We are thankful for their service; their skill and dedication are making a difference. 2026 National Public Works Week Poster
