SUBJECT: A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COMPTON APPROVING IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS IN SUPPORT OF THE 22ND
ANNUAL COMPTON STAND DOWN FOR VETERANS SEPTEMBER
19-21, 2025
SUMMARY
This Resolution approves in-kind contributions in support of the 22nd Annual Compton Veterans Stand Down to be held on September 19-21, 2025.
BACKGROUND
The Stand Down for Homeless Veterans (“Stand Down”) is an event that is held in cities all over the nation to provide food, clothing, medical services and referrals to veterans.
The Stand Down concept was used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for units returning form combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care, mail and receive letters, and enjoy the camaraderie of friends in a safe environment. Today, Stand Down refers to grassroots, community-based intervention programs designed to help the nation’s estimated 100,000 homeless veterans “combat” life on the streets.
The Compton Veteran Stand Down (“Stand Down”) is a three-day event providing supplies and services to Veterans and their families inclusive of homeless, at risk, and down-trodden, services provided include assistance with housing, employment, VA benefits, VA enrollment, VA medical care, VA mental health care, legal assistance, military records assistance, dental care, treatment/counseling, social security assistance, vision screening, food, clothing, hygiene supplies, showers, haircuts and entertainment.
