REQUEST CITY COUNCIL DIRECTION

ON EXTENSION OF POOL SEASON TO
AUGUST 28, 2025
July 30, 2025
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS
FROM: CHRISSY MEEDS, PLANNER I/RECREATION COORDINATOR UM

BRANT MESKER, CITY MANAGER
SUMMARY:

In past years the City receives requests to extend the pool season, which typically closes the last weekend before school starts. This year the pool is scheduled to close on August 8, 2025, for the regular summer season. Staff have spoken with lifeguards and believe there are sufficient lifeguards available to work on a modified schedule for an additional three weeks to keep the pool open to the public. This would extend the pool season and through August 28, 2025, should the City Council desire to extend the season and upon scheduling with the lifeguards we have no significant conflicts.
• Lap Swim T/Th 4:00 - 4:45 PM; Sat 10:00 - 11:00 AM
• Water Aerobics T/Th 4:45 - 5:30 PM; Sat 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM • Lifeguard Break T/Th 5:30 - 5:45 PM; Sat 12:00 - 12:30 PM • Evening Swim T/Th 5:45 - 8:00 PM; Day Swim Sat 12:30 - 5:00 PM Should the City Council approve an extension of the pool season, it would be recommended that there be no cost or fees to be collected for this three-week period. This would relieve staffing pressures and encourage more patrons to utilize this pool.

FINANCIAL:

The cost to operate the pool for an additional three-week period based on the schedule above is roughly $2,650 for labor and $9,000 for chemicals for an approximate total of $11,650. The City has experienced an increase in chlorine consumption this year due to various reasons.

Should the City Council approve this additional expenditure a mid-year budget adjustment will likely be requested.

RECOMMENDATION:

MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL:

1. AUTHORIZE THE CITY POOL TO REMAIN OPEN THROUGH AUGUST 28, 2025, FOLLOWING THE AFOREMENTIONED SCHEDULE; AND

2. DIRECT STAFF ON FEES DURING THE EXTENDED POOL SEASON.
