Technology
Hardware Funding
The library is requesting 8 new switches for more bandwidth and through put of data. These switches will replace the current ones that have reached the end of the lifecycle and will no longer be supported by the manufacturer. The Corona Public Library is requesting 10 new wifi access to more and better wifi through out the building and into the library's parking lot. The library building is 60,000 square feet on 3 levels and currently there are places where patrons can not access the wifi when needed. The library has requested new routers to connect to CENIC and the public computers. The library's CENIC connection is 1GB but the internet speed on the public computers and wifi is much slower due the older router. Our current router was purchased as part of a Broadband Grant that the library received in 2015. The library has also requested the accompanying 5 years licensing for threat defense, malware and url software and wifi access points. The library has requested funding for new firewall devices to protect the public internet and to create a secure connection from the public computers to the city hall servers along with the 5 year licenses needed to operate this equipment.

Inside Wiring The City of Corona is installing 129 new data cable runs with CAT 6e (2071 cable) which is the current cabling standard. The cables will be installed and properly supported in the hard lid ceiling and drop ceiling. Copper cables will be terminated on RJ45 inserts on SMBs or faceplates at each station. (Current standard) Copper cables will be terminated on new CAT6 patch panels in the closets. (Current standard) This cabling will be replacing CAT3 cabling installed more than 20 years ago and CAT4 installed more than 10 years ago. The connectivity for the public computers and the public wifi is reduced due to the deterioration of the coating protection which causes interference in the signal too. There is no accurate mapping of the earliest cabling so now Information Technology will have an up to date map making it easier to troubleshoot issues. The library received a Broadband Grant in 2015 but cabling was not part of the grant.

Element 5:
Comments
In 2015, the Corona Public Library received one of the first round Broadband Programs to connect to the CENIC network hoping that the library would be able to upgrade its public computers. It was not until this year that the City of Corona funded a capital improvement to upgrade the public computers from Windows7 to Windows10. The $100,000 project funded 54 new public internet computers with all new software and security. This grant would finally allow the public to access the full capabilities of the CENIC connection that was intended in 2015. Since the COVID19 crisis, the library has had more requests for wireless internet use. The access points installed in 2015 do not fully cover the library and the parking lot. They also have become slower with number users in the building. The grant would allow the library to provide faster speeds for patrons and better mobile printing. Printing continues to be an important service for the public. This project could be slowed by administrative procedures of the City of Corona which will require a staff report and approval/acceptance of the grant by the City Council. Normally, this takes about a month but it has taken longer because the Council only meets twice a month. Then the Finance and Purchasing department need to set up accounts and issue purchase orders which can take up one month. Finally, the last major variable is if the supply chain holds up the delivery of the new hardware. We are anticipating receiving the hardware with in 4 months but it could up to 7 months.
This grant will finally make the more than 30,000 public computer sessions a year and 40,000 wifi sessions a year at the Corona Public Library a 21st Century experience.
