Bicycle Parking Recommendations
The Coronado Mobility Commission is pleased to submit the following recommendations:
• Most areas of Coronado’s business districts have sufficient bike parking facilities to accommodate demand; however periodic assessments should be made and additional racks installed as needed.
• Because bike racks are often installed on the portion of sidewalks adjacent to automobile parking, care should be taken to position them so as not to interfere with pedestrian traffic or passengers entering or exiting parked cars. This may be accomplished by aligning the racks with the division between marked parking spaces.
• The City of Coronado should maintain an inventory of portable bike racks which can be deployed to provide additional parking at special events such as the summer concerts at Spreckels Park.
City crews could transport these racks using trucks from the existing fleet. As an alternative, secure, attended bike valet parking could be provided by volunteers with the San Diego County Bicycle Coalition (this currently is done at Carlsbad’s TGIF Concerts in the Park). • Educate the cycling public on the correct use of the various types of racks, especially the parking docks which are compact but require a particular level of knowledge to use properly. Cyclists should be encouraged to secure their bikes with U-locks or other devices that are resistant to cutting by thieves.
• Establish a process for businesses, HOAs and other parties to request additional bicicle parking racks, with the style of the racks to be chosen in consultation with the Coronado Arts Commission.
