Receive and approve the Cultural Arts Commission Annual Report for Fiscal Year (FY) 2023-24 and Work Plan for FY 2024-25.
BACKGROUND:
The Cultural Arts Commission (CAC) was established by City Council Resolution No. 8507 on September 26, 2011. The Commission is required to submit an annual report to the City Council summarizing its activities and accomplishments, and a work plan and goals for the upcoming year. Past reports may be reviewed on CoronadoArts.com under the Resources drop down menu.
ANALYSIS:
Notable Achievements for FY 2023-24
The Cultural Arts Commission FY 2023-24 Annual Report presents a comprehensive overview of the Commission's achievements over the past year. During the past year, new commissioners were appointed for three program areas: Arts Education, Arts Partners and Visual Arts. Notably, the Arts Partners program area adopted a revised definition of Arts Partners. A future goal of this program area is to provide Arts Partners with board development tools to ensure the viability of these important organizations.
The Visual Arts program area re-established a monthly meeting of creatives to encourage engagement in art events. The Commission remains engaged with artists through sponsorship of various performances, lectures, and exhibitions, including hosting four exhibitions in the Cityowned galleries and participating in a two-day exhibition at the 102nd Coronado Flower Show.
Arts Education Week was celebrated via a City proclamation in September.
Commission initiatives, events and programming, as well as those of our established Arts Partners, are publicized through local publications. In 2024 over 300 pages of content appeared in Coronado Magazine, Crown City Magazine, Coronado 365, the Coronado Times and the Coronado News. The Commission is appreciative of the support received from Coronado local publications in publicizing the art and culture in our community, The Commission also creates the popular weekly e-mail publication, “Five on Friday,” and maintains a robust presence on Coronado Arts Facebook and Instagram.
For the first time this year, the Cultural Arts Commission also helped coordinate local particiaption in the Americans for the Arts, Arts and Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) study. The study, conducted roughly every five years, assesses the economic impact of spending by nonprofit arts and culture organizations, as well as event-related spending by their audiences. City Council received a presentation on the study results at their December 19, 2023 meeting and the Commission has utilized the data for helping plan the upcoming year. Participation in the study also facilitated collaboration with six San Diego County municipalities and two California Art Districts, establishing an important network for future support and cooperation.
Upcoming Initiatives and Events
In May, the Commission will be sponsoring a student art experience at the upcoming Art and Wine Festival in May.
The installation of what will surely be a nationally recognized work of public art entitled the “League of Wives Memorial” is underway and will be completed in 2024. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) signal boxes along Orange Avenue have exceeded their life expectancy and the Commission has been working on new wraps which will be presented to City Council. The Commission continues to manage the Orange Avenue Banner Program now in its eighth year and successfully secured a grant of $36,000 from Discover Coronado to fund the program for the next year. This year’s banners included two nonprofit series and work is underway on new designs for the Fourth of July.
A major project for 2024 for the Cultural Arts Commission is participation in the World Design Capital (WDC) San Diego Tijuana inititive. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to shape the future of our region through the power of design. The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission, in conjunction with many of our arts nonprofits, are planning a series of events celebrating Coronado’s bi-national roots. By showcasing our community’s arts and culture, WDC 2024 will foster lasting economic, social, cultural, civic, and environmental ties. Events will include an international art exhibit, a gastronomic showcase of the region’s food and wine, lectures highlighting Coronado's architecture and murals influenced by our proximity to Tijuana, as well as regional authors and filmmakers.
The Cultural Arts Commission is appreciative of the opportunity to serve and partner with Coronado's many local artists and cultural arts organizations, and to act as a catalyst in developing our vibrant and cohesive arts community, strengthening arts education, and enhancing cultural tourism and economic development.
