CHAIR’S
LETTER
The arts are thriving in Coronado! And this year we have data to show the impact of the arts on our local economy and community through the national Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) study. Coronado nonprofit arts organizations generated $39.2M of economic impact - $13.9M in spending, and $25.3M in event-related spending (which does not include ticket costs). Another way to look at this is that every dollar spent by our nonprofit arts organizations results in almost $2 of local spending at restaurants, retail, and hotels. But what truly impressed me was the level of volunteer support in Coronado - in 2022, over 2000 volunteers donated over 85,000 hours to our non-profit organizations. This is a key contributor to the fabric that brings our community together and makes it a great place to live. These numbers do not include the individual artists or for-profit art endeavors like galleries and live music that also contribute to our arts landscape.

In the past year, the Commission worked with our Arts Partners on AEP6, supported a grant writing class, provided marketing support, and enabled collaborations. The Commission has assisted arts organizations to find performance facilities and provided recommendations on facility needs for our community. The Commission has continued its weekly newsletter on upcoming events, maintained an informative social media presence, and published on average six articles a month in local magazines and newspapers. On top of that, our two city galleries have held four exhibitions featuring local artists as well as a return of “Floral by Locals” at this year’s Flower Show. The popular banners on Orange Avenue program have featured our local artists and nonprofits, and the summer patriotic banners are getting a new look to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the parade. The installation of what will be a nationally recognized work of public art, “League of Wives Memorial,” is underway in Star Park. The Caltrans signal boxes along Orange Avenue are getting new wraps, featuring historic photos in a project supported by Coronado High students, and we are supporting our local art teachers by hosting student art exhibitions and making contributions to purchase much needed art supplies.

And the coming year is even more exciting, as we plan for “The Fourth Wave,” Coronado’s contribution to the region-wide World Design Capital San Diego/Tijuana. This one week series of events will be hosted by many of our Arts Partners, using art as a lens to build a better community that incorporates our rich history of arts, leisure, the military, and cross-border influences.

Yes, the arts are thriving in Coronado ...

AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS
AEP6 STUDY
AEP6 is the sixth economic impact study of
the nonprofit arts and culture industry in the
U.S. This study is conducted approximately
every five years by the Americans for the Arts
to gauge the economic impact (on
employment, government revenue, and
household income) of spending by nonprofit
arts and culture organizations and the eventrelated spending by their audiences.

This was Coronado's first time participating,
and we joined five local municipalities and
two Cultural Districts in San Diego County.

Previous studies were published in 1994,
2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017. (Due to the
unique nature of the realities of the global
COVID-19 pandemic, the AEP6 study was
postponed for 16 months.)
AEP6 makes clear that when we fund the arts,
we are investing in an industry that stimulates
the economy, supports local jobs, and
contributes to building healthy and vibrant
communities. For a complete copy of the

An Arts Partner is a nonprofit arts and culture organization that operates in Coronado and collaborates with others within the arts community to create, promote, or support creative endeavors. Arts Partners work together to enrich and sustain the cultural landscape of Coronado while demonstrating a positive community impact, including attracting increased business and tourism. Arts Partners are actively involved in the creation of opportunities for all to participate in and experience the arts. An Arts Partner shows commitment to fostering creativity, diversity, and innovation within the arts ecosystem and has a collaborative relationship with the community, other nonprofits, and the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission (CCA). In turn, the Arts Partners have access to training and support including lists of relevant grant opportunities, social media strategies, and marketing efforts provided by the CCA. THE LEAGUE

OF WIVES

PROJECT
In a void of public awareness and seeming lack of political attention to the circumstances of prisoners of war in
Vietnam, Sybil Stockdale and The League of Wives bravely stepped out of their era’s traditionally passive role of military spouses to demand the humane treatment of their POW
husbands.

They pressed the U.S. government for action. In doing so, they found their voice and forever transformed the role of the military spouse. Eventually becoming the National League of Families of Prisoners and Missing in Southeast Asia, their actions ultimately influenced a reduction in prisoner torture and contributed to the safe return of 591 Service Members.

The League of Wives Memorial Project honors these women, telling their story through the establishment of a memorial in Coronado, the birthplace of the organization and home to The League of Wives founder, Sybil Stockdale. This is a national story with Coronado roots. And one that continues today with the important role played by spouses in support of their partner who is serving in the military.

This memorial will be the first public monument in the
country to honor military spouses. In July 2022 the League of Wives Memorial Project gifted a beautiful bronze sculpture to be created by sculptors Christopher Slatoff and Elisabeth Pollnow. Once again a group of dedicated military spouses, worked to raise $350,000 for the creation of a bronze
sculpture memorial. They met this goal in March of 2024. The gift was accepted by the City of Coronado along with the determination of the siting in Star Park, the site of the community’s annual Memorial Day Celebration. The City
allocated $100,000 for the installation of the sculpture which is scheduled to be dedicated in 2024.

ART OUTSIDE THE BOX
TAKE 3! In May 2022, the Cultural Arts Commission initiated the process to replace the artwork used for the original "Art Outside the Box" project completed in 2018,
recognizing the wraps' 5-7 year life expectancy. Initially, seven Caltrans boxes from Third to Avenida de las
Arenas on Orange Avenue were wrapped. However,
two additional boxes were included in this project with the installation of the new traffic light at the entrance to the Hotel del Coronado.

Commission members and volunteers met with Caltrans
to launch "Art Outside the Box - Take 3!" in May 2023.

As in the previous project, the Commission enlisted the assistance of Coronado students for the project and
collaborated with the Coronado Historical Association
(CHA) and the Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA)
during the Fall 2023 term.

Designs incorporated historic photos selected by CHA
students from the Association's archives, chosen with
careful consideration of the location site. These photos were then forwarded to the Coronado School of the
Arts for design, which included the addition of vibrant colors to enhance the black and white images.

On March 19, 2024, CAC met with Caltrans to
review the proposed artwork. They received
tentative approval indicating that the proposed
artwork meets Caltrans' program standards. The
project is scheduled to be presented to the City
Council for approval during their May 7 meeting.

A Cultural Arts Commission goal is to
encourage the use of public spaces for public
art and provide venues for art and cultural
events. Banners installed in the Orange Avenue
Corridor are an effective way of accomplishing
this goal and have been a program of the City
of Coronado since 2016, The program is funded
annually through a generous grant from
Discover Coronado and managed by the
Cultural Arts Commission.

This year, the City displayed banners
highlighting the following nonprofits: Coronado
Chamber of Commerce, Discover Coronado,
Safe Harbor Coronado, Coronado Island Film
Festival, Coronado Recreation and Golf
Services and Sharp Coronado Hospital. In
addition, banners were displayed celebrating
the holidays and the Fourth of July. Currently
banners are flying in honor of a new public
artwork “League of Wives” scheduled for
installation in 2024 and the Coronado Art and
Wine Festival.

Look for new Fourth of July banners this
summer, a new class of “Celebrating Coronado
Artists,” and a new design for holiday/stay and
shop in Coronado banners.
