Camarada is requesting funding for eight "What is Tango" school outreach events, and two "Tango Buenos Aires" public concerts.

These events are planned to take place at various Coronado schools, including Silver Strand Elementary, Christ Church School, Sacred Heart Parish School, Coronado Middle School, Coronado High School, and the Coronado School for Performing Arts. The initiative seeks to inspire curiosity, creativity, and cross-cultural understanding through the universal language of music.

The first public concert will be free and held at the Winn Room. The second concert will be a low-price ticketed event at the Main Stage Theatre.

Funding is requested for the eight events in Coronado schools, two public concerts, marketing, project management, and printing. 86 Grant readers agreed that this group would be a
positive addition to the Coronado community.

Although new to the community, the group
demonstrated past success over 30 years. Because
they are new to the community, partial funding is
recommended.
82 Commission agreed that they want to support new
and fresh programming. Consensus to partially
fund the request for the 8 outreach events in
Coronado Schools and the outreach supplemental
printing.
$7,000
$7,000
Funding recommendation aligned with the Arts Commission recommendation and reader recommendation of partial funding. Funding proposed to cover the 8 proposed outreach events in Coronado Schools ($6,500) and the outreach supplemental printing costs ($500).

Classics 4 Kids is requesting funding to continue their partnership with the City of Coronado and bring their professional orchestra to the Coronado High School Main Stage Theatre in early November 2024 to benefit approximately 570 elementary students throughout Coronado. This educational programming celebrates diverse cultures and innovative STEM topics, bringing an arts integration opportunity to Coronado. Virtual programming in Spring 2025 will reach an additional 200 students, bringing the total students reached to approximately 770.

Classics 4 Kids has provided music education programs to Coronado students for the past three years. Funding is requested for administrative costs, professional costs, on-site staffing, marketing, supplies, tickets, in-kind classroom Docent visits, in-kind ushers, the virtual program, mileage, venue rental, and 2 buses for Silver Strand students. 95 The grant readers agreed that the application
demonstrated prior success. All readers
appreciated the diversity of performers and
integration of STEM curriculum. Full funding, or as
high level of funding possible, recommended.
90 The Commission agreed that this is a great
program offered to Coronado Schools that has
been successful in the past. Because it's scope is
limited in only offering programming to the
elementary school, partial funding is
recommended.

Funding recommendation aligned with both the grant reader and Commission recommendation. $17,500 is a slight increase from last year's award and derived from high scores from both review groups. Funding proposed to partially cover professional costs (total professional costs reported: $22,340).

The Coronado Community Band is requesting support for their ongoing efforts in enriching Coronado's cultural landscape through music and community engagement. Operational support from the Community Grant Program allows CCB to serve the community and to continue to promote outreach and access to musical arts for a wide range of community audiences. CCB focuses on retaining and attracting new band members and audiences, providing high quality performances, and reflecting Coronado's commitment to the arts.

Funding is requested for administrative costs, garage rentals, insurance, website hosting, non-profit registration, bookkeeping software, director stipends, professional services, marketing, rentals, sheet music purchases, instrument maintenance and repair, copy paper and toner, and event-specific costs. 96 The grant readers acknowledged the Community
Band's long history in Coronado, strong volunteer
base, and dedication to engage in artistic
collaborations. Feedback was received to increase
their social media presence to encourage outside
donations, and reduce reliance on City funding.

Otherwise, the request was well supported for
either full or partial funding.
85 The Commission agreed that the Community Band is a pillar of the Coronado Community and provides essential
programming. The Commission expressed concern with
providing full funding for the request because of the
additional in-kind donations the City provides for the group.

It was also noted that the Community Band could focus on fundraising to reduce their reliance on City funding.

The Coronado Community Theatre is requesting funding for both their 28th Free Classic Program, which provides free access to high-quality theatrical productions of classic plays, as well as for their general season support, which includes funding for a range of plays and musicals that provide opportunities for emerging artists while maintaining accessible ticket prices. The Coronado Community Theatre has been a part of the Coronado Community since 1946, and is run almost entirely by volunteers.

Funding is requested for house and lobby materials, food costs, photographer and videographer, set and costume materials, props, tech equipment, laundry, marketing, stipends, and five shows. 78 Grant readers support the Free Classic program but
hesitate to fund the operational costs which could be
offset by ticket sales and fundraising. Feedback
received that the proposal would have been stronger
with additional data or anecdotes. Noted that
volunteers provide significant in-kind services but
outside support and fundraising is lacking. Partial
funding that covers the Free Classic program
recommended.

The Coronado Historical Association is requesting funding to create a year-end exhibition that will look at the venerable hotel's past, present and future, including a behind-the-scenes peak of the five-year restoration project. This exhibit is in partnership with the Hotel Del as well as Emmy-award winning producer, Elsa Sevilla, who is creating a documentary on the the Del's restoration project.

Funding is requested for exhibit panels, largest format photos, painting and preparation for galleries, photo reproduction and artist fees, exhibit opening and lecture events, and exhibit installation. 93 The grant readers expressed support for
this exhibit but at a lower funding level
than the cross-border exhibit. Although
the Hotel Del is a historic landmark with a
history worth sharing, that grant readers
would have preferred to see more
information on community impact.
87 The Commission believe this exhibit is excellent to produce in conjunction with the Hotel Del's renovations. It was unclear why CHA is shouldering this cost. A suggestion was made that the Del may contribute to the exhibit, or CHA could explore additional collaboration with the producers of the documentary series. Partial funding was recommended for the exhibit panels, installation costs, and opening events and lectures.

The Coronado Junior Arts League (CJAL) is requesting funding for a specialized musical theater and education program for children aged 8 to 14. All CJAL performance sign ups are facilitated through the Coronado’s CivicRec online registration portal and 30 percent of all performance revenue goes directly to the City of Coronado. CJAL’s first production, in fall of 2023, was an acclaimed production of "The Wizard of Oz” featuring 20 Coronado youth actors. The second production, Annie, had a cast of 31 and a wait list of 7. CJAL actively partners with SDSU's School of Theatre, Television, and Film, the Coronado Playhouse, CoSA, the Community Foundation, Camp Able, and the City of Coronado.

Funding is requested for staffing expansion, a scholarship program, and production costs. 84 Grant readers agreed that because the Coronado
Junior Arts League is a new organization, there is
limited data available to judge performance and
impact. With that said, readers agreed that the
level of collaboration and strategic partnerships
is impressive and that the organization is well
poised to be successful. Partial funding
recommended.
88 Commission agree that although the Coronado Junior
Arts League is a newer organization, it is collaborating effectively with other community organizations and fills a community need. The Commission supports funding
for the younger community in the arts. The requested
amount is substantial for a first-time applicant,
therefore it is recommended to approve partial funding. $30,000

Commission agree that although the Coronado Junior
Arts League is a newer organization, it is collaborating effectively with other community organizations and fills a community need. The Commission supports funding
for the younger community in the arts. The requested
amount is substantial for a first-time applicant,
therefore it is recommended to approve partial funding. $30,000 $30,000 Funding recommendation aligned with the grant reader and Commission recommendation to partially fund. Funding is proposed to cover the program expansion scholarship costs ($5,000) and production costs ($25,000).

The Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra is requesting funding for their 2024-25 concert season which will include eight concerts. Specifically, CPO is requesting support to hire a consultant with marketing and fundraising expertise, to upgrade their website, and costs associated with one major concert and two (free) chamber concerts. Since 2021, the Philharmonia has performed eight concerts with full orchestras and two chamber concerts that span a wide variety of classical genres and themes. Along with the free concerts, the Philharmonia has kept ticket prices for their major concerts intentionally low to increase access, as well as provide an opportunity for students to attend ($5/student ticket).

Funding is requested for conductor and musician fees, a fundraising and marketing consultant, a website upgrade, the Coronado Performing Arts Center rental, licensing costs, print and marketing materials, and miscellaneous overhead expenses.
80 The grant readers agree, and support, the
Philharmonia programming that is accessible and
brings down barriers to entry and agree that it is
a worthwhile program. Although there is some
demonstrated community support, consensus is
that fundraising, collaborations, and partnerships
should be improved. Partial funding
recommended.
83 The Commission acknowledged that the Philharmonia is a great organization that is beloved by the community.

Commissioners also agreed that the request and proposed programming may be too ambitious for next year. Rather
than adding additional concerts, the Commission agrees
that the organization should continue to focus on board development and fundraising. Partial funding recommended for two concerts.

Musica Vitale requests funding for the 2024-25 season, which will feature five Main Stage concerts, as well as various activities for the Musica Vitale School Program. Musica Vitale’s programs are offered to the Coronado community free of charge or at low ticket prices, making Musica Vitale’s offerings accessible and affordable. Musica Vitale has brought concerts to Coronado and San Diego County since 2005 and last year's Main Stage concerts were attended by over 1,000 audience members. The current proposal aims to continue presence with an annual Coronado residency every January by presenting four concerts in January 2025 with larger instrumentation while maintaining the same concepts and artistic quality. All four concerts will be free admission.

Funding is requested for musician concert fees, administrative costs, rental of the Grand Room, mileage, instrument supplies and accessories, sheet music, print costs, personnel costs, photography/videography, and rental of stage risers. 97 The grant readers strongly supported funding
this proposal. The organization successfully
conveyed the quality of programs and
demonstrated that the Coronado community has
supported their past performances. The grant
readers agreed that it is a privilege for Coronado
to be included in their concert schedule.
94 The Commission agreed that this is a
well-deserving group that wrote a strong
grant proposal. This organization was
successful last year during their
performances in Coronado. Funding is being
recommended for two of the four concerts.

$15,984
Funding recommendation is aligned with the Commission recommendation to fund two of the four proposed concerts ($15,984). The proposed funding is an increase from previous year funding, but justified with the markedly high reader score and support from both the readers and Commission.

The Villa-Lobos International Chamber Music Festival is requesting funding to repeat the school outreach project that was initiated in January 2024. The first project included eight classroom performances for 4th and 5th grade classes at Coronado's Village Elementary School and Silver Strand Elementary School. This proposal includes 12 classroom visits and concerts at both Silver Strand and Village Elementary schools, along with two large assemblies for elementary, middle, and high school students.

Funding is requested for musician concert fees, sheet music, photography/videography, personnel costs, insurance, accommodations (room/board) for two musicians for five days, and mileage costs. 96 The grant readers support full funding of
this proposal. They noted that the
proposal was well organized and thought
out. They also acknowledge that this is a
great opportunity for students and
musical engagement.
95 The Commission supported funding at least
2/3 of this proposal for the large assembly and
classroom musician fees and associated costs.

They noted that this proposal includes an
endorsement from Shane Schmeichel, which is
a testament to the popularity of the program.

Funding recommendation is moderately lower than the Commission and Reader recommendation to better match what the organization received last year. This takes into account the increase the organization received on their other application. Funding is proposed to cover the large assembly musician fees ($4,000) and the classroom musician fees ($4,800).

The Coronado Floral Association is requesting funding for the 103rd Coronado Flower Show in April 2025. The CFA is the longest running club in Coronado, and the Flower Show is the longest running event. The Show is the largest outdoor flower show in the United States. The organization has rented tents from a local vendor for over a decade, which has helped keep costs down by establishing goodwill with the vendor. Funding will help offset the cost of tents, tables, and other materials necessary to produce the show. In 2023, the show drew over 8000 attendees. Each year, hundreds of volunteers work to develop a theme, produce the show, and bring in vendors from across San Diego county. The event weekend also includes a Saturday night fundraising event.

Funding is requested for event rentals.
84 The grant readers agreed that the Flower Show is an important community event, but would have liked to see additional information in the application on economic impact. The grant readers acknowledge the long history of the show and recommended $84,000 for funding to match last years contribution. $84,000

The San Diego Historical Society is requesting funding to produce a documentary series called, "Historic Places with Elsa Sevilla," which aims to enrich the cultural landscape and historical understanding of the region, including the City of Coronado. The team will focus on producing three captivating documentaries that chronicle the restoration of the Hotel Del Coronado from 2018 to 2024. The program will broadcast on KPBS-TV/Web and PBS stations.

Funding is requested for talent and crew, camera rental equipment, post production equipment and editing, clothes, hair, and makeup, marketing, fiscal sponsor, four premiers, business insurance, closed captioning, and catering.
76 The grant readers agree that additional information on the documentary's impact and expected benefits for the City would have been beneficial. Additionally, there were questions regarding why the City is being asked to be the largest contributor of the project, who owns the rights to the documentary, and what the collaborative efforts with local organizations will entail. The grant readers found it challenging to propose a funding recommendation because a professionally produced documentary is much different from the other grant proposals. $20,000
Funding recommendation is moderate with opportunity for additional Council deliberations. Because this is a new organization and project, a moderate funding amount is proposed that aligns with other contributors. Proposed funding is to cover costs associated with talent and crew ($20,000).

Safe Harbor is requesting funding for the Family Support Services arm of the organization which offers reduced fee counseling to 66 individuals and 165 collateral. Safe Harbor offers counseling services on a sliding scale basis from $0-$80 and is seeking funding to hire a new clinician.

Funding is requested for clinician compensation, payroll and personnel costs, professional services, program supplies, training and development, fundraising, office expenses, insurance and licensing, and bank service fees. 75 The grant readers agreed that the Healthy Families program proposal is much stronger than the Family Support proposal because the Healthy Family programs have a much wider community reach and described impact. The grant readers expressed hesitation to fund salary overhead for a program that charges clients, particularly when a portion of the client base (military) has access to insurance (Tricare/VA) and other mental health resources. Partial funding recommended.
$40,991
Funding recommendation is aligned with the reader recommendation but also takes into account Safe Harbor's prior year funding levels. Proposed funding is suggested to cover compensation ($33,891) and the office expense ($7,100).
