RE: Thank You — City of Coronado Stormwater Mitigation Project FY25 Congressionally Directed Spending Request
Dear Senators Padilla and Butler:

On behalf of the City of Coronado, I write to express my gratitude for your support for putting forward to the Appropriations Committee a combined $3.15 million Congressionally Directed Spending request for the City of Coronado Stormwater Mitigation Project.

As you know, the City of Coronado Stormwater Mitigation Project will consist of the construction of a pump station near the First Street and A Avenue intersection and the acquisition of a Combination Sewer Truck with jetting and vacuuming functionality. Because the City is at sea level, and is surrounded by water, it is very vulnerable during rain events, particularly when they occur during high-tide. Once complete, the project will prevent pollutants from entering the water ways which surround the City, protecting water quality, and help prevent flooding in our low-lying city during rain events. The First Street and A Avenue area is particularly prone to flooding, which have caused power outages to residents and infrastructure in the area.

For instance, in January 2024, the City experienced 4.25 inches of rain during a short period which resulted in road closures and a blown electrical transformer, which in addition to leaving the area without power for eight hours, impacted the Transbay Pump Station. This pump station is the most critical in the City’s sanitary sewer system as it is the last stop for effluent that is transported across the San Diego Bay to the City of San Diego for treatment and disposal/reuse.

Additionally, one of the cities two Combination Sewer Trucks—essential to the daily maintenance of sewer mains and spill mitigation–has reached the end of its life cycle and needs to be replaced.

The City of Coronado is grateful to you for your leadership and commitment to the City. We are also grateful for your continued support of this request through the FY25 appropriations process.

Sincerely,
Richard Bailey
Mayor
