CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT
November 19, 2024 5f
APPROVAL OF HOLIDAY TIME OFF FOR EMPLOYEES IN DECEMBER 2024 RECOMMENDATION:

Authorize up to nine hours of additional leave to City employees during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday period, consistent with previous years.

BACKGROUND:

Continuing a tradition established by the City Council, time off for City employees has historically been approved for the Christmas to New Year holiday period. This time off is not included in collective bargaining agreements or City policies and must be used in December; it cannot be banked, carried over, or cashed out. The gesture is intended to express the City Council’s appreciation for the workforce.

Over the years, this leave has been utilized without disrupting normal City services. While a smaller crew typically operates between December 24 and January 1, employees have coordinated their schedules to maintain essential staffing and coverage throughout December.

If approved, full-time benefited employees will receive nine (9) hours of additional leave to use between December 1 and December 31, 2024. Part-time benefited employees will receive a prorated amount based on their schedules (e.g., half-time employees will receive 5 hours, and threequarter time employees will receive 7 hours).

This additional leave has been well-received, allowing employees to enjoy more time with family and friends during the holiday season.
