CONSIDERATION OF APPOINTMENT OF ONE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO SERVE A
ONE-YEAR TERM ON THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION OR AS MAY BE
MODIFIED AT A FUTURE CITY COUNCIL MEETING
RECOMMENDATION:
Consider for appointment one (1) student representative (non-voting) to serve a one-year term to expire September 30, 2025 on the Parks and Recreation Commission, or as may be modified at a future City Council Meeting.
BACKGROUND:
City Council Policy No. 6 sets forth the competitive process to fill vacancies on City boards, commissions, and committees.
City Council Ordinance 1480 established a student representative position on the Parks and Recreation Commission to reflect the City's commitment in engaging and incorporating the perspectives of the younger generation in local governance. The purpose of this non-voting position is to provide an avenue for Coronado High School students to offer valuable input and insights into parks and recreation issues affecting the community.
The incumbent will serve a single term of one year, commencing on October 1, 2024 and expiring on September 30, 2025. The rotational nature of the position allows for continuous infusion of fresh ideas and ensures that the Commission remains responsive to the evolving needs of the younger population. Student representation reflects a proactive and forward-thinking approach to community engagement, contributing to the betterment of Coronado's parks and recreation services.
At the November 19, 2024, City Council meeting, Council directed the consolidation of the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Street Tree Committee. Staff will be returning with this item at a future date and recommends continuing the practice of appointing a student representative at this time with further discussion future appointments at the consolidation meeting.
