Dear Council Members,
It would be my pleasure to join the Council. I believe the residents of Coronado would benefit from my energy, devotion to community service, and technology and business experience. As a computer engineer and entrepreneur, I have worked for Fortune 500 companies, startups, and have founded three software companies of my own. I live in Coronado Cays, where I am an avid sailor and cyclist.
I pride myself in applying common sense and critical thinking when solving problems. A cost-benefit analysis should be applied to any solution. I believe in collaborative brainstorming to anticipate any unintended consequences before reaching a policy decision. I also believe that new and existing laws are useless without enforcement.
My extensive community service has given me a broad perspective of the challenges facing our community. I am winning the battle against prostate cancer, and nothing has prepared me more than decades of volunteering to help those who are blind, mentally ill, battling childhood cancer or have no roof over their heads.
I embrace challenges. When I became the president of the Poway High School Choir Boosters, I discovered that the non-profit organization had not filed taxes for 8 years. The treasurer immediately resigned. I dug in and worked with the IRS to restore our 501c3 status. Along the way, I implemented accounting software to run the organization going forward.
As a tandem bicycle captain in the Blind Stoker's Club, I have developed a deep respect for the courage of the handicapped community. My work with Interfaith Community Services gave me hands-on experience serving families and our veterans. Mentoring boy scouts as they achieved the cycling merit badge made me a passionate advocate for bicycling safety. My community service exposed me to all branches of government, including my congressman's office, the San Diego Sheriff's department, and the Internal Revenue Service.
I consider myself a common sense environmentalist. My work with San Diego River Rescue, the Boy Scouts, and my love of backpacking, cycling and sailing, gives me an appreciation for both the wonders of our natural resources and the need for preservation.
There are so many things I love about Coronado. The city brilliantly fosters a strong sense of community while welcoming tourists. Our city's honor and reverence for our military is an inspiration. We live in a paradise for cyclists, water activities, dining and tourism. As a long time dog owner and lover, I find Coronado to be a haven even for dogs. But I strongly believe that ordinances should be obeyed and enforced to protect the balance you have all worked so hard to create. I would welcome the opportunity to help steward our city to new levels of perfection.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
David J. Hock

Dear Members of the Coronado City Council,
I am writing to express my sincere interest in being appointed to the vacant seat on the Coronado City Council created by the November election. Since 1987, I have been an active participant in shaping our community's civic, cultural, and educational landscape. My extensive volunteer experience, coupled with my roles as Coronado's first Arts Administrator and Senior Management Analyst in the City Manager's Office, has equipped me to contribute effectively and immediately to the Council's work.
My qualifications are detailed in the attached resume, but to summarize:
• Strategic Leadership: I have extensive experience in community outreach and engagement, strategic planning, and program development and implementation.
• Arts & Culture: Since 2014, as the City's first Arts Administrator, I have supported the Cultural Arts Commission in strengthening Coronado's cultural identity through public art, visual arts, special events, and partnerships with local nonprofits and city departments.
• Key Initiatives: I have played a critical role in major city projects through the City Manager's Office. Notably, during the 2020 pandemic, I served as the community liaison, addressing immediate needs of the community by coordinating citizen initiatives like the Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) program, organizing successful blood drives, and facilitating partnerships to establish community vaccination and testing sites. More recently, 1 partnered with the Assistant City Manager to research, prepare, and present the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Downtown Beautification Project to the City Council.
In addition, I have served on two key city committees addressing zoning and development:
• The Residential Standards Improvement Program (RSIP) and R-4 Committees, where I contributed by reviewing and recommending updates to Coronado's zoning ordinance.
I also served as the first Development Director for the Coronado Historical Association, where I gained a deep appreciation for Coronado's rich history and developed a profound admiration for our unique heritage. These experiences have taught me the importance of thoughtful planning, balancing growth with preservation, and maintaining our valued "village" atmosphere.
Beyond my professional contributions, 1 am deeply rooted in Coronado. My husband and I restored our 1912 Craftsman Bungalow on C Avenue, where we raised our three children-proud graduates of Coronado schools. I volunteered in leadership roles with the Parent Teacher Organizations, the Coronado Schools Foundation, and the Coronado Islanders Foundation, and I helped launch the KCMS Broadcast Program. From 1990 to 2018, I mentored Coronado students pursuing college admissions at USC, and in 2012, I received US's highest alumni service award for my leadership and service spanning over nearly two decades.
Having spent nearly 11 years in the City Manager's Office, I have a firsthand understanding of municipal operations. I know Coronado's staff, projects, and challenges—and, like many, I take great pride in calling Coronado home.
I am confident that my background, skills, and passion for our community uniquely position me to serve effectively as a member of the City Council. Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications further.
Sincerely,

Dear Coronado City Council,
I am applying for the position of Coronado City Councilman. I have been a full-time resident and homeowner in Coronado for over 25 years. I have been in the real estate business for nearly 45 years acting in numerous capacities as a salesmen, manager, appraiser, lender, investor and owner. I have been civically active in Coronado for over 20 years. It has been my privilege to serve on various Coronado Boards and Committees. I feel it is very important as a potential future public servant to have interacted with community organizations, as well as the city, to gain understanding and appreciation for how all these entities interact.
Among my volunteer activities in which I have served in several different capacities:
• Coronado Yacht Club Board of Directors (4 years)
• Coronado Yacht Club Commodore (1 year)
• Coronado Yacht Club Staff Commodore (14 years, and counting) • Negotiated and signed a land lease with the Port of San Diego for the Coronado Yacht Club
• Senior Member of the Coronado Yacht Club Finance Committee (19 years, and counting)
• Rotary Club of Coronado Board of Directors (2 years)
• Coronado Maritime Foundation Board of Directors (7 years, and counting) • California Plaza Board of Directors (9 years, and counting) • Commissioner on the City of Coronado Historic Resource Commission (2 years with 1 year remaining on current term)
• Coronado Historical Association Building Committee (1 year) • Committee to bring Make-A-Wish to Coronado
• Coronado High School Football Chain Gang (3 years)
• Rotary Beach Clean-Up
• Reactivated Rotary Speech Contest
• Reactivated Rotary Student Rotarian of the Month
These are the highlights of my volunteerism. I have not included dozens of committees and sub- committees on which I have chaired or served. My involvement has allowed me to forge relationships and contacts throughout the community. It has allowed me to learn how Coronado "works" and how Coronadan's feel and react to situations and events. It also has exposed me to a wide range of opinions from people from all walks of life.
In my professional career and in my civic activities, I have interacted with Coronado's Zoning, Planning, Engineering Departments, the City Clerk, the Mayor, Council Members, Historic Resource Commissioners and the City Manager. My experience of working with City staff has allowed me to learn how they function. I believe this insight and familiarity with staff and their roles give me an insight that few applicants may have. My understanding translates to being an effective leader in our community.
I look forward to the chance to represent all
citizens of Coronado in a fair and transparent nature. Please consider appointing me as an interim Councilperson.
Thank you!

Dear Honorable Mayor Duncan, City Councilmembers Downey, Fleming, and Steward, Please accept this letter of interest for the position of Coronado City Councilmember by appointment for the two-year term due to the vacancy of Mayor Duncan's former seat.
I ran in the 2024 election for Coronado city council, missing the position by a mere eighty votes (half of one percent), receiving a total of 3,013 votes. The Coronado voters are confident in my abilities and experience, and have spoken. I was honored by the public endorsement of Coronado's Congressional Representative Scott Peters. It is the first time in recent history that a sitting congressman has endorsed a Coronado candidate, and it was due to my advocacy for our community's ongoing beach sewage crisis.
Mayor Paloma Aguirre and Former Mayor Serge Dedina of our coastal neighbor Imperial Beach, our state Assemblymember, Tasha Boerner, and other across the bridge elected officials endorsed me for this council due to my non-profit advocacy on behalf of Coronado in Port reform, the sewage crisis, e-bike safety and environmental issues. My leadership of the Coronado non-profit StopTheSewage.org and High School STS Club is ongoing. This, and my extensive public policy relationships with regulators, elected officials, and appointed commissioners at regional agencies that are critical to decisions affecting Coronado, are unique and useful qualifications that I will bring to the council.
As a co-founder of StopTheSewage.org I continue to advocate for permanent solutions to our cross- border pollution crisis and with local, state and federal officials and other NGO's and non-profits. I serve on Imperial Beach Mayor Aguirre's Regional Health Task force, and serve as a founding member of the Transboundary Pollution Coalition of San Diego non-profits. Educated at UCLA (where I swam on the championship Bruins women's swim team), with a Bachelors from San Diego State University, I was awarded a Master of Sustainability Leadership from Arizona State University in 2023.
My ASU cohort studied Coronado specifically from the perspectives of transportation, housing and construction, GHG emissions, waste management, water and drought, and future specific governance challenges due to the many agencies (Navy, SANDAG, CALTRANS, Port, MTS, LAFCO, State Lands Commission, CA Coastal Commission, etc) that have jurisdiction in Coronado's affairs. My knowledge of how to build resiliency in Coronado through policy options in this new era of super-storms, aggressive wildfires, and climate change, would bring additional scientific expertise to governance allowing our community to adapt to the new-and real-challenges we face.
I lived in Coronado as a young adult with my sons attending Coronado public schools. I grew up in Pasadena, California, spending summers here. My husband and I bought our home in the Cays in 1999 before returning permanently in 2018. I have lived in the Village, the Cays and my mother-in-law has a place at the Shores which allows me to bring true perspectives on unique challenges in these district areas.
I am a married mother of four, grandmother to six and want to protect Coronado for our future generations to enjoy.
I ask for your vote for the appointment to fill the city council position vacancy.
Sincerely,
Laura Wilkinson Sinton
Coronado Resident
Candidate for Coronado City Council 2024
