ACCEPT A DONATION OF $2,000 FROM THE CORONADO JUNIOR WOMAN’S CLUB FOR
CORONADO RECREATION SCHOLARSHIPS
RECOMMENDATION:
Accept a donation of $2,000 from the Coronado Junior Woman’s Club to support Coronado Recreation Scholarships, expanding access for Coronado youth to participate in classes and camps.
BACKGROUND:
The Coronado Recreation Scholarship was revitalized in 2022, with a focus on providing more financial support for participants to offset the costs of programming. Award of a scholarship is based upon funds available, number of requests received, and the applicant's financial situation; the applicant's family income cannot exceed 80% of the County of San Diego Area Median Income Limit (AMI) to qualify.
Funding for the program primarily comes through donations and, to a lesser extent, proceeds from the vending machines at the Coronado Community Center.
The Coronado Junior Woman’s Club, which is dedicated to enhancing the spirit of Coronado through educational, civic, and philanthropic services, has donated $2,000 to the fund, which will offset the cost of 13 scholarship awards. The Club also financially supports the annual Turkey Coloring Contest in the department and has been a generous donor to the fund in prior years.
ANALYSIS:
Acceptance of this donation will directly benefit low-income youth in Coronado, ensuring they have the opportunity to participate in recreation programs. If approved, the City will send a letter of appreciation and acknowledgment to the organization.
FISCAL IMPACT:
There is no fiscal impact to the City, as the donation serves to provide a means for underprivileged participants to register for programs. The funds are designated for scholarships and the City does not incur any additional expenses.
ALTERNATIVE:
Do not accept a donation of $2,000 from the Coronado Junior Woman’s Club.
