BOARD, COMMITTEE OR COMMISSION DESIRED: Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) STATEMENT OF INTEREST AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:

I am both an active bike riderAND runner, and I have a history of promoting bicycling among school-age children.

Member of BPAC since March 2OL3- I have been an active member of this committee for nine years.

Member of Marin County Bicycle Coalition (MCBC) for about 20 years - I can't remember the exact year that I joined. I remember seeing MCBC in the 4th of July parade, promoting the idea of opening of the Alto Tunnel.

I became a member shortly thereafter. l've been bicycling in Marin for 29 years. I currently ride about 24-28 miles per week. I hope to see the completion of the North-South Greenway someday.

Member of Tamalpa Runners club for about 10 years - I actively participate with this running club, and I routinely run in Corte Madera and the trails above. You can find me on the levees, Sandra Marker Trail, and the steps to the top of Christmas Tree Hill. I currently run about 16-18 miles per week. Sidewalks, steps, trails ... I make sure "pedestrian" is part of BPAC,
East Corte Madera resident - For most of my time on BPAC, I was the only resident from the East side of 101, and I realized that I brought a unique perspective to make sure all of Corte Madera was being represented.

Organized Bike to School Day - From 2008 through 2OI3, before the Cove School was open, I organized a dozen Bike to School Day events that each resulted on over 100 students riding bicycles from East Corte Madera to Neil Cummins and Hall schools on the West side of 101. After the success of the first rides in 2008, future events expanded school-wide and to neighboring schools. One of my favorite memories is seeing a sea of bicycles overflowing the bike racks at the schools.

STATEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF CORTE MADERA AND ANY PAST/PRESENT COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:
ln addition to the community involvement mentioned above, I have coached the following youth sports teams o Twin Cities Little League - coached nine teams
r Marin Girls Softball - coached two teams
e Corte Madera Soccer - coached one team
My wife and I believe in the value of community involvement. Her participation is broader than mine and includes leadership roles with Redwood High School Foundation, Boy Scout Troop 43, Twin Cities Little League, a school bond measurd, and our Neighborhood Response Group.

PERSONAL INFORMATION (How long have you lived in Corte Madera, family size, etc.) My wife and I have lived in Corte Madera since 1995, where we raised our two children, who are now adults lf you are not selected at this time, may we keep your application on file for future consideration? YES: X NO:

The BPAC is important to me as I ride bikes everyday in and around CM. I am particularly concerned about the significant amount of traffic groMh in town during the 30+ years I have lived here. ln Madera Gardens where I live, a great number of homes have been sold to families with children and as such, the number of car trips in and out of MG has skyrocketed along with the number of families who walflride bikes/drive their kids to Neil Cummins. And speed limits and stop signs appear to be voluntary to many drivers, both adults and teenagers. I imagine this is happening in other neighborhoods.

STATEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF CORTE MADERA AND ANY PAST/PRESENT COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:

I have been involved in numerous neighborhood association activities in Madera Gardens. I also am currently on the Ad Hoc Finance Committee and Sales Tax Citizen's Oversight Committee.

PERSONAL INFORMATION (How long have you lived in Corte Madera, family size, etc.) 34 year resident of Corte Madera. Two children who attended Neil Cummins, Hall Middle and Redwood High.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS
Good day Corte Madera friends,
It is my intention to assist Corte Madera in addressing solutions to fight climate change. We are collectively late to the table in mitigating climate change by offering safe alternatives to driving and reducing emissions. I would like to help and collaborate with the town to ensure safe passage for bicyclists and pedestrians. I want the best for the residents of Corte Madera, which includes safe protected cycling routes and improved pedestrian infrastructure.
ln orderto makethata reality,we need to include measures like bollardized bike lanes, bicycle prioritysignals and raised crosswalks. For example, Bollards are bendable plastic posts mounted on the bike lane edge that offer cyclist's protection. More so, they can absorb impacts by cars and spring back up post contact. They are inexpensive, user friendly, and can be installed within hours. They also help slow cars down as drivers must be vigilant to not drive over the bike lane. By doing this we can maintain our current vehicle lane's while ensuring physical protection in the bike lane.
ln addition, Bicycle priority signals are traffic signal buttons pushed by bicyclists before entering an intersection.

They are used in our other Bay Area counties such as San Francisco. This provides bicyclists a L0 second safety head start before cars enter the intersection. The intersection of Tamalpais and San Clemente drive is a prime candidate for a bicycle priority signal.

Lastly, Raised crosswalks are crosswalks with speed bumps built into them. They force drivers to slow down and watch for pedestrians in the crosswalk. They are simple but quite effective at slowing down drivers and increasing safety for pedestrians. The multiple crosswalks on both sides of the Town Center Highway 101 overpass are ideal candidates for raised crosswalks.

Furthermore, every crosswalk in the town should have flashing pedestrian signals. I have seen pedestrians walking to the bus stop on Highway 101 almost get hit by cars because there was no flashing pedestrian signals These are simple and cost-effective fixes but they are long overdue and can save lives.

It should be noted that over 6O% of car trips in America are 3 miles or less. ln this day and age, there is no reason why every main arterial in town shouldn't have protected bike lanes on both sides of the street. 95%of people don't bike for daily errands because they fear for their life or their bike being stolen. We must mandate protected bike parking stations in front of grocery stores, shops and beyond. Furthermore, we need to build a pedestrian bridge between Town Center and The Village to re-connect a town severed in half by Highway 101. The town must fight to build the Alto Tunnel by 2030, an action that could take thousands of cars off the road. Bigger projects on the horizon such as the pedestrian bridge and Alto Tunnel will take years of planning, community involvement and grant funding. But these projects must proceed as they are essential to our town's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.

STATEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE OF CORTE MADERA AND ANY PAST/PRESENT COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:

I have never owned a car nor do I plan to ever. I bike around Marin daily and have an acute understanding of how dangerous Corte Madera's intersections are. I have been run over at no fault of my own due to less-than-optimal road design. I have been biking in Corte Madera for over 21 years and understand the safety improvements needed for every intersection in town. Currently l've been working with the county as a member of the 2030 Housing Element Stakeholder Committee. ln the past I have attended public town meetings to voice support for protected bike lanes. I study tragic engineering and urban planning in my free time.

PERSONAL INFORMATION (How long have you lived in Corte Madera, family size, etc.) I was born in Corte Madera and have been living and biking here since 1993. I live among a family of three in town. I hope to live long enough to see Corte Madera become the most bicycle and pedestrian friendly town in California. Thank you for your consideration of my application.

Respectfully,
Henry
