Goal
I am applying for the vacant seat on the Library Commission, specifically for the seat representing the City of Cotati. My goal is to help support the Sonoma County Library System and staff, and to help an already great system continue to develop and grow.

My life and career experience has shown me that great libraries strengthen communities.

Having recently retired, I would like to be able to continue to contribute to the field, and to bring the extensive experience I have to offer for the benefit of the Sonoma County System.

I am presently a resident of Petaluma, but I have extensive experience understanding and balancing community interests with system interests in areas of Public Library policy and practice. In this position, I would diligently research and represent the specific interests of the Cotati community.

Strengths
I am a passionate supporter and advocate for the importance of public libraries. Throughout my career, my focus and specialty has been the support of public library services through technology. I have extensive experience in the public library field, both in the private and public sectors. I am personable, creative, optimistic and energetic. I have spent many years developing technology strategies for public libraries, and also maintaining the day-to-day implementation and operations of those strategies. I have been an effective manager of people.

I have been an effective manager of large public budgets.

I have a long and deep understanding of the various models of public libraries in the United States. I maintain relationships with people working in public libraries across the country. I am very familiar with the governance model of the Sonoma County System as it is similar to the system where I served, a large county-wide system, balancing the economies of scale for central services with the varying specific and unique service needs of the communities which it serves.

I have particular expertise in the evolving role of technology in libraries and a passion to apply the best of what technology has to offer, where it fits and makes sense, into the library world.

The King County Library System, Issaquah, Washington
Director of Information Technology Services
I was responsible for all aspects of technology service for KCLS which is one of the largest public library systems in the United States. Serving the communities that have grown up surrounding Seattle, KCLS is a centrally served, independent library district governed by a 7 member independent board of directors. The system supports 50 libraries of various sizes from very large to very small. I was a member of the Executive Management Team reporting to the Executive Director.

While at KCLS we passed a $172 million bond measure in 2004 which led to the building of many new libraries and the redesign of others. I was responsible for the technology planning and delivery for this capital improvement project. I managed a staff of 30 people and together we were responsible for the development and day to day operation of the Network infrastructure, Telecommunications Systems, Desktop computing infrastructure for both staff and patrons, and a wide variety of both public facing and organizational supporting software and system applications, including public catalogs, collection management systems, desktop operating systems, financial and HR systems, and an elaborate robotic sorting and shipping system for books and materials throughout the KCLS system.

The KCLS system is a great system full of beautiful libraries and great people. I am very proud of my time there.

Various Positions
When I began my library and technology career at Dynix, public libraries were just beginning the original wave of migration from card catalogs to online catalogs. Dynix developed what, at the time, was a very forward thinking and popular library catalog and the company grew fast. I became involved in the company early on and had many opportunities to grow, learn, and explore during my time there, starting out as a customer service intern, then becoming an account manager, a software application trainer specializing in acquisitions, a support programmer, a customer-support team leader, and finishing my time at Dynix in sales and sales management.

Ironically, in the mid-nineties, Sonoma County Library (under director David Price if I remember correctly) was my customer for a short period and I worked with you all back then on upgrades and enhancements to your early Dynix System. The Horizon system that Sonoma County currently uses is a descendant of the original Dynix System, of course, having undergone significant changes over time.
