Cotati City Council
Agenda Staff Report
Item type: REGULAR AGENDA (ACTION)
To: City Council
Subject: APPOINTMENT OF A LIBRARY COMMISSONER
Date: September 24, 2024
Written by: Kevin Patterson, Deputy City Clerk
Recommendation
It is recommended that the Mayor nominate a Cotati representative on the Sonoma County Library Commission, and that the City Council adopt a motion to ratify the Mayor’s nomination.
Background
The Library Commission provides governance for the Sonoma County Library; establishes policy; sets goals and objectives; hires and evaluates the director; establishes and monitors the annual budget; signs necessary contracts; exercises such other powers, consistent with the law to foster the effective use and management of the library. Sonoma County residence is required and preference is generally given to applicants who reside within Cotati city limits. The term is for 4 years.
Analysis/Discussion
The City Council appointed Cyan McMillan at the May 9, 2023 regular City Council meeting as a representative to the Sonoma County Library (SCL) Commission, to serve the remainder of a 4-year term. Mr. McMillan chose not to seek re-appointment to the SCL Commission at the end of his term.
The Library Commission opportunity was advertised on the City website and the Sonoma County Library website. Three applications were received, from Malia Anderson, Gillian Kendalol, and Tina Poles.
The seat will be filled through appointment by the Mayor and ratification by the City Council.
The appointment term will run until August 2028.
Financial Considerations
There are no fiscal impacts to the City by filling the vacant Committee position.
Environmental Issues
Making appointments to a commission does not constitute a project under the California Environmental Quality Act.
