Dear City of Cotati Council,
The Empire Runners are proposing a new 5K/10K race on 9/13/2025 from the Cotati Hub to West Railroad Avenue, the beginning of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's epic "Running Fence" art project which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2026.
The Empire Runners was also formed during the running craze of the 70s. We admire the historic achievement of the "Running Fence" and do not want the anniversary to be forgotten.
We hope to make our "Running Fence Run" an annual community foot race, and also an art festival featuring works inspired by Christo and Jeanne-Claude's art, running, and Sonoma-Marin landscapes.
For 2026, we are planning a marathon based at Valley Ford with the 5K/10K race, awards ceremony, and art festival held in Cotati. In addition to being the 50th anniversary of the Running Fence it will be the 25th anniversary of 9/11. We would like to hold a memorial ceremony at the Cotati Hub on Friday 9/11 and the foot races on Saturday 9/12.
In addition to the 5K/1OK, we plan a one mile race for elementary school kids and shorter dash events for kids under 5. The Empire Runners and the Road Runners Club of America has a "Kids Run the Nation Program" that we plan to promote with local schools and boys and girls clubs.
The Empire Runners are a 501(c)3 nonprofit. We hope that the City of Cotati will waive the park rental fees and support our efforts to increase running in the community with the new "Running Fence Run" foot race.

Here's the link to the proposed 5K route. We might run it twice for a 10K.
The request is to close Old Redwood Road and La Plaza at the race start/finish line. Close one lane of Old Redwood and West Railroad Street. I'm preparing an application for Sonoma County for the parts outside Cotati.
6:00am to 12:00pm street closures for a full 10K. The La Plaza portion might be closed longer for a festival.
Let me know if you need a more formal letter for the Council.
