Event Narrative Questions
Please provide an event description.

The Running Fence Run will hold an Saturday Sept 12, 2026 Art and Music Celebration of Christo's 1976 "Running Fence" at La Plaza Park. We will encourage a one-mile art walk/run from the SMART station to La Plaza Park with QR codes presenting interactive history of the Running Fence. A marathon, half-marathon, and 10K are being planned for Valley Ford, with buses ferrying runners and spectators from Cotati to the race start/finish. A scaled wrapped Arc de Triomphe, Christo's last art project before his death, is envisioned as a center piece in La Plaza Park for photo opportunities for runners and spectators.

How will your event promote diversity in the Cotati community? Our event will expose the community to the inclusive art of Christo, who called his Running Fence "a scream for freedom." Christo welcomed opponents and relished the democratic debate over the 2-week installation. We will announce the race to local schools in both English and Spanish and will invite a diverse range of non-profits to host exhibit booths.

How are you/your organization suited to produce this event? Please provide community resources that will be used if applicable (volunteers, vendors, local contributions, etc.)? I will be working with the Empire Runners and other local running clubs for the race and fun runs, and with arts groups and museums to host exhibits at the event. The marathon race (in planning) will be managed by a professional race management team. The race approval is not a requirement for the Art and Music Festival or one-mill art walk/run.

What are your goals for this event? What population are you aiming to serve? Using measurable amounts whenever possible, please explain how you will know if you have succeeded in your goals The goal is to reignite the Running Fence's global publicity of the 1970's and boost awareness of Sonoma County and the beauty of our regional landscape. We also want to organize a timed foot race in the beautiful, tranquil and rural environment of Valley Ford to acknowledge the "running" theme of Christo's installation.

How will you be able to host successfully continue your proposed event in future years, without Cotati Cultural Grant funding?
If the marathon is successfully approved and executed, it would be a self sustaining venture that could fund an annual celebration. The art walk/run and an art festival on its own could also be self sustaining, but more is interesting when tied to a running event or major anniversary.

How does your event promote community togetherness and/or a broad community appeal? The Running Fence was the most publicized art event in Sonoma County history. We will have interactive exhibits and encourage local artists and school children to create art inspired by Christo and Jeanne-Claude's artworks and the theme of running. We will also encourage community fun runs (without street closures or timed races).

Do you own/operate a Cotati business/organization? If so, please list.

By partnering with local vendors, artists, and small businesses, the event also strives to strengthen the local economic and creative ecosystem, ensuring that the community benefits both culturally and economically from the program.

How will you be able to host successfully continue your proposed event in future years, without Cotati Cultural Grant funding?
Our long-term plan is to ensure that the AFRESH cultural event becomes a self-sustaining annual program that can continue successfully even without future Cotati Cultural Grant funding. After the first year, we will expand our revenue model to include diversified income streams such as ticket sales, vendor fees, sponsorships, community partnerships, and in-kind contributions. As the event grows its audience and reputation, we expect increased interest from local businesses, cultural organizations, and regional sponsors who value community-based arts programming and are seeking meaningful avenues for visibility and engagement
How does your event promote community togetherness and/or a broad community appeal? The AFRESH cultural event promotes community togetherness and broad community appeal by creating a shared space where residents of all ages, backgrounds, and identities can come together to experience music, dance, storytelling, and culinary traditions in a welcoming and inclusive environment. The event is designed to unite the community through the universal language of the arts-encouraging people to connect, learn, celebrate, and participate regardless of cultural familiarity or prior exposure to Afronisian traditions.

Event Narrative Questions
Please provide an event description.

The Cotati Hub Film Festival is a grassroots celebration of local filmmaking and inspired content creators. Shining a spotlight on the storytellers who capture the true spirit of Sonoma County. This community-driven event brings together filmmakers, artists, and neighbors for a vibrant showcase of original shorts, documentaries, animation and creative experiments.

We all have a story to tell. Whether you're a seasoned filmmaker or a first-time creator with something to say, the Cotati Hub Film Festival is where local voices rise, ideas spark, and the culture of Cotati comes to life on the screen.

How will your event promote diversity in the Cotati community? This Festival is - for us by us. The Cotati Hub Film Festival celebrates and uplifts creators from all backgrounds. By keeping submissions accessible, spotlighting underrepresented voices, offering inclusive screenings, and inviting a diverse group of artists, the festival ensures that every storyteller has a place on the screen and everyone has a seat in the audience.

How are you/your organization suited to produce this event? Please provide community resources that will be used if applicable (volunteers, vendors, local contributions, etc.)? My name is grew up here. Went to Penngrove Elementary and Petaluma High. My father used to play at the Inn at the Beginning and I would sleep under the tables late at night as he finished his set. Along with my wife Maura, we are also the founders and 1, creative director of the Hermosa Beach Film Festival. 1 ran that festival for 6 years. After 25 vears in LA: have moved, with a breath of comfort, back too Cotati. I'm a writer/director, but mostly an event producer.

My company at www.SeasideCinemaProductions.com and my production company at www.OnAxisProductions.com are both here to help.

What are your goals for this event? What population are you aiming to serve? Using measurable amounts whenever possible, please explain how you will know if you have succeeded in your goals This is a multi faceted event. Created for both the young and old, LGBTQ, cowboys and everyone in between.

It all begins with the submission process and getting the word out for our "Call for Entry's" campaign. Also working with local businesses that we can provide sponsorship opportunities for and also support. These events take a village, luckily for us, that is exactly what we have.

How will you be able to host successfully continue your proposed event in future years, without Cotati Cultural Grant funding?
These events also take time to develop. We believe that each year the Festival will expand to include workshops on independent filmmaking, industry panel discussions and mentorships to those that have a story to tell and can calibrate with our creative community to help.

How does your event promote community togetherness and/or a broad community appeal? New ideas require old buildings. Bringing the community together to share ideas and to experience these films is an exercise in critical thinking. Films were never meant to be watched on a phone or binge from a couch, but to experience together as a group. Laughter breeds laughter. Sharing all the emotions of cinema is meant to be experience together.

In addition, raising funds throughout the year in preparation in keeping this festival going annually as it has been done successfully in other cities in Sonoma County with the support of their cities and the many volunteers willing to participate their time. We want Cotati residents to enjoy Cotati events and, in the future, participate to volunteer with Cotati projects! How does your event promote community togetherness and/or a broad community appeal? Food, entertainment, culture awareness, and gatherings always bring community together. What also makes a difference in promoting is the location. As for La Plaza Park, location, location and location is key to any great event. Cotati has other annual festivals which all are successful, and this Cinco de Mayo will also be a success for the community of Coati. The Circle Exchange is a free, culturally enriching community event designed to foster resilience, education, and intergenerational connection for Native American families and individuals in the Cotati area.

Hosted by the Native Americans in Higher Education and Mentorship organization, this unique gathering celebrates Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and provides vital support to students navigating college life.

Event Highlights Include:

Higher Education Mentorship: Structured and informal sessions connecting Native students with established Native professionals and community leaders to discuss careers, academics, and success pathways.

The Barter Plant Exchange: A vibrant, non-monetary Native Plant and Seed Barter Exchange. Bring native seeds, plants, or cuttings to trade, reinforcing traditional Indigenous values of sharing, reciprocity, and ecological knowledge transfer.

Free Native Food Table: To ensure maximum accessibility and weicome all families, we will offer a complimentary tasting of traditional Native American dishes and beverages, including both vegan and non-vegan options.

Radical Inclusion: This event is explicitly welcoming of all family structures, including LGBTQIA+/2SP families, ensuring a safe and supportive space for every member of the community.

How will your event promote diversity in the Cotati community? The Circle Exchange is fundamentally an event that promotes diversity through intentional design, focusing on inclusion, equity, and cultural sharing
Key Diversity Elements:

Social Inclusion: We explicitly welcome LGBTQIA+/2SP families and diverse Native households, ensuring a safe, affirming, and multigenerational space that validates all family structures within the community.

Socioeconomic Equity: The event is entirely free to attend, and the Native Food Table provides complimentary food tastings (with vegan/non-vegan options), eliminating financial barriers for low-income families and students.

Cultural and Intellectual Diversity: The Barter-Only Native Plant and Seed Exchange celebrates Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), integrating non-Western intellectual traditions into the community.

Educational Diversity: The Higher Education Mentorship component supports a population facing unique systemic barriers, promoting educational equity and increasing the visibility of diverse professional role models.

How are you/your organization suited to produce this event? Please provide community resources that will be used if applicable (volunteers, vendors, local contributions, etc.)? The Native Americans in Higher Education and Mentorship organization is uniquely positioned to successfully produce The Circle Exchange. Our capacity is built on three key strengths: targeted expertise, lean operational efficiency, and deep strategic local partnerships.

1. Targeted Expertise and Cultural Authority
Our national organization, anchored by its active Santa Rosa satellite program, provides the necessary infrastructure and cultural authority for a successful event in Cotati. Our core mission-supporting Native Americans in higher education— directly aligns with the mentorship component of this project. We possess the cultural competency required to manage traditional practices like the Native Plant/Seed Barter Exchange and the Native Food Table with the utmost respect and accuracy, ensuring the event is resonant and authentic for the community it serves.

2. Operational Efficiency and Fiscal Responsibility
We are committed to operating efficiently to ensure maximum grant funds go directly to the community. We utilize a lean operational structure, relying on a small, dedicated team of up to 5 core volunteers for logistics, ensuring focused and accountable execution. This efficiency supports our fiscally responsible strategy: we are requesting only $5,000 of the $10,000 total project cost, demonstrating our commitment to leveraging additional resources and minimizing reliance on grant funding for overhead.

3. Strategic Local Partnerships
The success of The Circle Exchange is secured by strategic collaborations that embed the event within Cotati's civic and economic landscape: Civic and Business Support: We are actively partnering with the Chamber of Commerce to secure support from local small businesses and with local non profits to expand our outreach to diverse ethnic communities.

4. Community Engagement: Our collaboration with La Plaza will ensure strong engagement with local families.

5. Resource Utilization: We leverage the invaluable knowledge of Elders and Knowledge Keepers (compensated via stipends) as our event anchors, utilize regional Native professionals as mentors, and engage Native vendors to enrich the cultural marketplace. These partnerships ensure the event is a truly collaborative community effort.

What are your goals for this event? What population are you aiming to serve? Using measurable amounts whenever possible, please explain how you will know if you have succeeded in your goals The Circle Exchange is a community-focused initiative aimed at enriching the lives of the Native American community in the Cotati and Sonoma County region.

Target Population:

The event specifically serves Native American students in higher education, Native professionals, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and all Native American families and households, with an explicit commitment to ensuring inclusivity for LOB TQIA+ families.

Primary Goals:

Educational: To strengthen the educational success pipeline for Native students through structured, culturally relevant mentorship.

Cultural: To revitalize and share Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and essential cultural practices, including bartering and traditional food preparation.

Equitable Access: To eliminate financial barriers and promote radical inclusion to ensure full participation by all community members, regardless of income or background

1. Educational Impact (Mentorship)
Success will be measured by student engagement and the quality of connections made:

We aim to achieve a minimum of 10 student attendees participating in the mentorship sessions, verified through sign-in sheets.

We will consider the mentorship component successful if 80% of participating students report making a meaningful professional or academic connection, as determined by a post-event survey.

2. Cultural impact (Exchange and Leaming)
Success will be measured by the flow of knowledge and resources:

We will facilitate a minimum of 50 unique barter transactions (plant/seed/knowledge exchange), tracked by a simple check-in system at the Barter Exchange tables.

We will consider cultural learning successful if 90% of all attendees report learning new traditional knowledge (about plants, food, or mentorship), as assessed by the post-event community survey.

3. Equitable Access and Participation
Success confirms the event was broadly accessible and welcoming:

We aim for a total event attendance of 100 community members, verified by registration and check-in records. We will consider the inclusion goal successful if 95% of survey respondents report feeling welcomed and affirm that the free food and inclusive environment (SP/LGTBQIA+ welcoming) removed barriers to their participation.

How will you be able to host successfully continue your proposed event in future years, without Cotati Cultural Grant funding?
This application requests $5,000 (of a $10,000 total project cost) to launch The Circie Exchange: Native Plant, Food, and Wisdom Sharing in September 2026, hosted by Native Americans in Higher Education and Mentorship.

Event Purpose and Impact
The event is a multifaceted cultural community initiative designed to support the Native American community in Cotati. It strategically promotes diversity by offering:

Mentorship and Education: Structured sessions connecting Native students with professionals to strengthen the academic pipeline.

Cultural Exchange and Equity: A Barter-Only Native Plant and Seed Exchange to promote Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and resource reciprocity.

Inclusion: A free Native Food Tasting (with vegan/non-vegan options) ensures accessibility for all, explicitly welcoming LGB TQIA+ families and eliminating financial barriers.

Organizational Capacity and Partnerships
The organization is uniquely suited to execute this project due to its established Santa Rosa satellite program and cultural expertise. We operate efficiently with a lean team of up to 20 volunteers. Our financial strategy relies on leveraging in kind support and key local partnerships to secure small business sponsorship and community outreach, covering the remaining $5,000 of the budget.

Goals and Success
We will measure success using clear metrics to ensure accountability and impact:

Attendance: We aim for a total event attendance of 100 community members.

Mentorship Success: 10 students engaged, with 80% reporting a meaningful professional connection.

Cultural Transfer: Facilitating 50 barter exchanges, and confirming 90% of attendees report new cultural learning.

Sustainability
The investment from the Cotati Grant will be replaced in future years. Our plan is to transition the event into a self- sustaining annual Native American Cultural and Educational Fair by Year 3, funded by formalized small business sponsorships and expanded revenue from a curated Native vendor marketplace. The initial grant seeds a vital, lasting community tradition.

How does your event promote community togetherness and/or a broad community appeal? The Circle Exchange is designed to function as a powerful point of convergence, promoting togetherness both within the Native community (internal solidarity) and across the broader Cotati population (external appeal).

1. Fostering Internal Community Togetherness
The event creates deep solidarity and connectedness within the Native American community through:

Intergenerational Exchange: The structure requires students, professionals, and Elders/Knowledge Keepers to interact and share wisdom, fostering strong intergenerational bonds and a sense of collective responsibility for educational success and cultural preservation.

Affirmation and Inclusion: Explicitly welcoming all Native families, including 2SP/LGBTQIA+ households, reinforces the concept of a single, unified, and accepting community circle.

Shared Sustenance: The act of sharing free traditional food at the Native Food Table is a powerful, universal act of community care and hospitality, reinforcing kinship and mutual respect.

2. Achieving Broad Community Appeal
The event is structured to attract and engage the wider Cotati community beyond the primary audience:

Universal Themes of Sustainability: The Native Plant and Seed Barter Exchange has significant appeal to the general public interested in gardening, sustainability, local ecology, and self-sufficiency. This component acts as a natural draw for non-Native families and environmental groups.

Cultural Immersion: Offering a free, accessible tasting of authentic Native American cuisine provides a unique and welcoming point of entry for all Cotati residents to experience and appreciate a distinct local culture, promoting cross- cultural understanding.

Civic and Business Integration: Strategic partnerships with organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and Los Cien ensure the event is promoted across diverse civic and business sectors, guaranteeing broad awareness and endorsement within the non-Native community.

Educational Value: The cultural knowledge shared through TEK and the mentorship component offers valuable educational content that appeals to local schools, universities, and community learners of all ages.

By blending cultural specificity with universally appealing themes of food, gardening, and education, The Circle Exchange will serve as a powerful unifying annual event for the Cotati community.
