For my public comment in Citizens Business, I would like to bring up the lack of accessibility into City Hall with a wheelchair. I understand it is an 100 year old plus historic building, but there needs to be at least one easily accessible door into City Hall with a ramp. Here is a video of my struggles at the last council meeting.

The problem is not that the door is not wide enough, the problem is that it doesn't have a power assist to keep the door open, for one thing. I have made it through safely with doors of this width as long as they have power assist. Also, it is uneven ground on the flat part of the ramp and nowhere near to balance if I have to get out of the wheelchair. Add to this, there has been wet pavement due to rain, making the ramp slippery to go down with my wheels.

Public Comment
I want to give the City a chance to cure and correct this ADA accessibility problem that the City staff have known about for a month now. I will not be attending in person on Tuesday, but I expect by the first city meeting in March that the door will be modified or that there is a work order telling when the work will be done.

The City should be deeply concerned that I might fall given the situation with the door in that the City would have failed to correct a known ADA hazard. Of course, I don't want to fall (I haven't fallen in 6 months), but what would be the liability to the City if I did fall and was injured???
Sincerely,
Laurie Alderman
