RE: Regional Discovery Center Evaluations and Conceptual Design Dear Mayor and Council,
Redwood National Park supports the contract amendment to the Beachfront Park Master Plan scope, to include the Regional Discovery Center Evaluations and Conceptual Design. Redwood National Park has been working closely with City staff and key stakeholders over the past year to re-envision the current use of the Cultural Center/Visitor’s Center focused on its important role for the community and visitors as a central information hub as part of the overall Beachfront Park Master Plan.
Crescent City has taken significant strides towards making this special coastal community a destination for tourists from around the world and a thriving downtown hub for locals. With projects such as the Front Street rehabilitation, Beachfront Park expansion, new Transit Center, and new Gateway currently underway, it’s clear that the location of the current Cultural Center/Visitor’s Center could become the centerpiece of these exciting new developments. We see the transition of this facility to a Regional Discovery Center, which would include a jointly operated Redwood National and State Parks and Del Norte Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center, as a timely convergence of resources destined to create a more efficient way to connect visitors traveling along Highway 101 to our local businesses, amenities, and endless opportunities for recreation. By bringing all partners to one central location on Front Street, this could allow for over a million visitors per year and our local community to embark on a journey of exploration to connect with the incredible resources this area has to offer.
We share in the City’s vision to help spur the local economy and create a stronger sense of connectivity to our local resources by bringing this ideal building to its full potential. We firmly believe that this project will help make Crescent City a true destination with lasting benefits to residents and visitors alike.
With this letter, Redwood National Park pledges to contribute $25,000, through our cooperating association, towards the Regional Discovery Center Evaluations and Conceptual Design, similar to the contribution that was previously made towards the Cultural Center Feasibility Study. We sincerely value the partnerships that have formed through this process and look forward to seeing this project through to fruition.
Sincerely,
Steve Mietz
