Dear Mr. Mayor, City Council Members,
I would like to draw your attention to the condition of the “Bonsai” tree at Preston Island.
This tree is one of the most iconic trees along the California coast.
I am an amateur photographer with more than 30 years of work along the coast, and I cannot think of any other tree of this nature. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of taking several shots of it.
Unfortunately, likely due to a combination of soil erosion and storms, it is in deteriorating shape.
One branch has partially broken off, and another one has started to sag. A few smaller branches appear to have died.
I think a good arborist would be able to salvage the tree, and maybe even reverse some of the damage.
When properly managed, I believe this tree has the potential to be a tourist attraction.
Personally, I find it more aesthetically pleasing than the much better-known Lone Cypress on 17 Mile Drive.
If it is within the City’s budget, I am asking you to consider engaging an arborist to try and save this tree.
I would like to address this issue with you in your upcoming meeting on November 18.
With kind regards,
Wouter Roorda
