Subject: Initiative to Extend the Ballona Creek Bike Path

Dear Regional Leaders:

The City of Culver City SUPPORTS the initiative to extend the Ballona Creek Bike Path from its current terminus at Syd Kronenthal Park in Culver City, so that it runs from the ocean all the way to Venice Boulevard and Cochran Ave nue in Los Angeles. The extension will not only lengthen the bike path itself but also increase the path’s connections to other bikeways and streets to offer a safer ride throughout the L.A. area.

The property under consideration for inclusion in the project is largely unutilized and the improvements would have a dramatic impact.

Culver City recognizes Ballona Creek and its bike path as a critical community resource for flood control, water quality management, regional ecology, active mobility, healthy living, and recreation. The bike path offers a protected route for our students, their parents, commuters, and visitors to travel to and within Culver City. Additionally, the use of the bike path assists in relieving heavily congested areas of traffic by providing an environmentally friendly travel alternative.

Culver City has grown into a jobs center for the entertainment and technology se ctors; therefore, mobility continues to be a key issue for the City. Expansion of the bike path would provide a clean, active, non-car transportation option for workers who live east and north of Culver City, such as the West Adams, Koreatown, and Arlingto n Heights neighborhoods, as well as those who live in nearby beach communities. This project will complement the many mobility projects the City is currently planning.

This extension will also augment multiple City initiatives to improve the Ballona Creek Bike Path and expand access to it. For example, the City Council has recently voted to open a new residential access point along the path. The City supported the recent improvements to the Park to Playa Trail, which now allows bike path users connecting to the Trail to cross to and from the Crenshaw area.

This year, the City partnered with the Baldwin Hills Conservancy on a “Greening the Greenway” grant-funded project that will make improvements along a 1.1 mile stretch of the bike path. The City is also breaking ground to replace the Higuera Street bridge, which will add a new ramp connecting the dynamic Hayden Tract business area to the bike path, expanding opportunities for commuters to use the path.

Support of this project fittingly demonstrates Culver City’s commitment to the Ballona Creek Bike Path. I hope that you will join in aiding efforts to develop it into a regional resource that reaches further east into traditionally underserved areas of Los Angeles.

Sincerely,

Alex Fisch
Mayor
