RESOLUTION NO. 2025-R __________
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
CULVER CITY, CALIFORNIA , URGING THE UNITED
STATES TO SUPPORT A PLANT BASED TREATY.
WHEREAS, the global climate crisis is rapidly worsening, requiring bold and immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate its impacts; and WHEREAS, the Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, is a legally binding international treaty committing all nations to address the climate crisis, but the agreement leaves specific actions to individual countries, organizations, and individuals; and WHEREAS, the Plant Based Treaty is a global initiative aimed at reducing reliance on animal agriculture and promoting sustainable, plant-based food systems, serving as a companion to the Paris Climate Agreement; and
WHEREAS, research shows that plant-based meals have a 63% lower carbon footprint than animal -based meals, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stresses the need for methane reductions to limit global warming to 1.5°C; and WHEREAS, the disproportionate land use required for animal agriculture contributes to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation, with 78% of farmland used for animal farming producing only 18% of global calories and 37% of its protein; and
WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles and 41 other cities around the world have already expressed support for the Plant Based Treaty, aligning with growing global recognition of the need for food system reform to combat climate change; and NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Culver City, California, DOES HEREBY RESOLVE, as follows:
1. The City Council urges the United States to Support a Plant Based Treaty.

2. The City Council directs City staff to submit a copy of this Resolution to the Plant Based Treaty organization as an official endorsement.
