The Carole Kine and

with the icons'songs as ei.

sharing personal informa-
tion aboui their lives togeth-
er and aparr. Beginning her
career as a 16-year-old song_
wnter, Carole King spent
ycars shaping the sound ofthe 19606, writing hit6 for
some of the biggest Brtists ofthe era including ,,Will you Still Lovo Mc Tomorrow',
and "One Fine Day,' after
nrarrying her high school
sweethear.t. Gerry Goffin, inr959. Katis performed both songs to perfection.

In 1962, Gerry persuaded
Carole to go on American
Bandstand to perform her
first slngle. "It Might as
Well Rain Until September.',
the next eong perlbrmed.

Insecure about her solo per-
lbrrnance skills, nervous-
ness got the best of her and
the song was rated a 42 out
of 100 points by a panel ofteels. That rebuke led King
to leavc the industry as a
pcrforrner for 9 years, whilc
ti years I ounger Janres Tay-
lor was developing his skillsgrowing up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, as the men-
tal illness that plagued him
nrost of life was alreadv tak-
ing ahold ol him at age 14.

In 196?, Taylor went to
Greenwich Village in New
York City, with musical
partner Danny Kortchmar
where they formed The Flv.
ing Machine. performing inthe small Night Owl club.

This was ihe first place Car-
ole saw James perlbrrn his
original music. And she nev-
er fbrgot him or his easy rap-
port with the arrdience while
onstage, so different from
her fear ofperforning on herown. -l'or even though Carol had written over 400 Bongs
recorded by other artists,
she never thought her voice
was good cnough to sing '
by Shari Banetr
her own songs.

While Gery and Carole
were immensely successful
as songwritcrs drrring the
early years of their mar-
riage, personal differences
led to rheir divorce in t96g.

Feeling uprooted as a sin.gle mother, Carole moved
to Los Angeles where she
hoped to launch a srrccegstirl
solo career, She and Jarrres
frequently crossed paths
at local clubs, and theirfriendship blossomed baeed
on their love of music and
songwriting.

In November 1920, Car.
ole King stood backstage at
the Troubadour Club in Los
Angeles, clutching the piano
with trembling hands. l.or
ycars, she had been thc voice
behind the voices -the writer
of songs that defined a gen-
eration, yet rarely the oner
standing rrnder the lights to
sing them. That night was
different. Encourased bv
