Abigail Walker: SelfDetermination Program
Manager
Let’s start off by discussing
what is considered WRC
“Traditional” services.

Discuss why these traditional
services may not work ideally for
everyone.

SDP is one option / choice if this
is the case for someone you serve.
30-35 people
in SDP each
10 10 Self-Determination Mentors
Each SDP Team member also provides SDP mentoring
for their designated Service Coordinator Team.

What is the Self-Determination
Program (SDP)?
3 The Self-Determination Program allows participants
the opportunity to have more control in developing
their service plans and selecting the service
providers to better meet their needs.

It’s Voluntary – People can always change their mind
and go back to Traditional service delivery if SDP
isn’t working well for them for any reason.

What is the Self-Determination
Program (SDP)?
3 The Self-Determination Program is about the person
served leading the way they want their services
provided:
o What type of services and supports they need
o Selecting who will support them from the
existing Regional Center vendor, or from
individuals and agencies not currently
connected to the Regional Center.
o …and more!

Individual Budget
o Adjustments can be made after the
person begins the Self-Determination
Program if the planning team identifies
unmet needs, or there are significant
changes in the person’s life
circumstances.
o The Individual Program Plan (IPP) would
get updated to reflect these changes,
and the budget could be reviewed and
updated if appropriate.
6 Spending Plan
The Spending Plan details how the funds in
the Individual Budget will be used to pay for
services to meet needs and barriers related to
the person’s disability.
➢ Based on Personal Goals outlined in the
Indvidual Program Plan / IPP.
➢ Assures that services do not replace Natural
Supports, Generic Community Resources,
Entitlements, etc. in the person’s life. 8
Financial Management Service
Agency (FMS)
FMS Agencies Support the Self-Determination Program by:
o Handling the funding allocated for your services via
your SDP Spending Plan.
o Processing payroll for employees if people chose to
hire their own staff (taxes, Labor Law compliance, etc.) o Providing Monthly Summaries / Spending Reports.
