fa WHEREAS, TheCityofCupertinowishestorecognizethoseyoungmenand ' ._l women from the community who fought and risked their lives in _ - l the Persian Gulf conflict; and
a WHEREAS, Special acknowledgement should be given to those service people " who showed outstanding valor in the face of extreme danger; and ' - WHEREAS, Marine Corporal Paul Haayer, a gunner who operated a light " armored vehicle (LAV) in the battle for Kuwait, is especially a deserving of recognition for courageous efforts during the U.S. ' land war involvement; and
WHEREAS, Paul was the first Marine LAV in Kuwait, doing advance reconnaissance ahead of the main strike force, and this put him in several life-threatening situations; and
.' WHEREAS- During the course of the operation, he passed through rninefields . known as "The Gates of Hell," found his vehicle in the midst of an Iraqi bunker complex, traveled through thick, black smoke, and, when the air cleared, came face to face with two heavy armored " tanks; and
WHEREAS, Through all of this, he fought with a bravery and determination . -:
that allowed him to come through his ordeal with no physical " injury and his composure and ingenuity under intense pressure " , _ subsequently served as an inspiration for those fighting with him. a ,-:
