A RESOLUTIONOF THE CITY COUNCIL OFTHE CITY OFCUPERTINO
DESIGNATING A CUPERTINO POET LAUREATE
WHEREAS, thestudyof literatureformsavitalpanof oursharedanddiverseculture; and
WHEREAS, poetryexpressespersonalandpublicstoiesinanartformaccessibletoall; and
WHEREAS, poetryformsanimportantpartofourcitizen's educationaboutcultureand history; and
WHEREAS, studieshaveshownthatchildrenwhoreadpoetryshowimprovementsin vocabulary, criticalanalyticalskills, andreadingcomprehension; and WHEREAS, readingandwritingpoetrygivechildrenandadultsanoutletfortheir feelings, experiences, andquestionsabouttheirworld; and WHEREAS, Californiawasthe first stateto appointa poetlaureateandmany communitiesin Californiahavesuccessfullyappointedpoetslaureate; and NOW, THEREFOREBEITRESOLVED, thatthe "PoetLaureate" isherebyestablished in the Cupertino
BEIT FURTHERRESOLVEDthattheCupertinoPoetLaureateSelectCommitteeshall overseethe selection and administration of the Poet Laureateprogram.
