MEMORANDUM
TO: CUPERTINO CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS
RE: Streetlight Transition Assessment Report, Pilot LED Installations P
er City Council Direction, staff has installed dark sky compliant LED streetlights at various locations around the Civic Center. Prior to this item being presented to City Council on July 18th, 2023, we are requesting that each City Councilmember take a few minutes to visit these sites after dark to observe the lighting being provided.
O
n September 20, 2022, Council considered the Streetlight Transition Assessment Report prepared by Tanko Lighting. The report evaluated the feasibility of transitioning all city streetlights to light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures. Council requested that the report be brought back at a later date with modifications based on Council input. One specific request was that LED fixtures be installed at select pilot locations so that Council and other members of the public may have the opportunity to evaluate the proposed fixtures in the field. This memo contains a status summary of the pilot installations.
T
ypically, the wattage of streetlights varies depending on street classification and other associated factors (low/medium/high). Fo ur locations were selected for piloting. All locations had existing IND (induction) luminaries though existing wattages varied. This provides the opportunity to evaluate LED light output of various intensities in the field.
A location summary is provided in Table 1, below.
S
taff plans to include the approval of the Streetlight Transition Assessment Report as a Consent Item in the July 18, 2023 City Council meeting. The updated report will be part of the submittals for the item. Prior to that meeting, we hope that Council Members can visit and observe the LED pilot installations (listed in the following Table and Figure).
The installations are all within close proximity to City Hall.
S
taff attempted to photograph the streetlights, but the photographs did not provide valuable information on the lighting levels or illumination. The updated report will provide photometric measurements.
