ORAL COMMENT:
The following members of Faith In Action Bay Area (FIABA) expressed concerns about the fears and uncertainties faced by the immigrant community due to ongoing ICE activity and enforcement. These fears, arising from current immigration policies, include the threat of ICE raids, detainment, and deportation. Speakers urged the Council to disseminate information about the Rapid Response Hotline (203-666-4472) and Network to reassure all community members that they are not alone during this difficult time, and to feel supported and emboldened by their local government. They emphasized the negative impacts these fears have on families, daily activities, public gatherings, and overall mental health. Some speakers shared personal experiences in dealing with ICE. Melissa Mejia recounted her father's detainment by ICE and her family being evicted from their home, while Fernanda Areas discussed how the fear of raids affects everyday activities such as going to school or grocery shopping. Sandra Pryor shared the emotional toll on children who fear losing their parents, while volunteer Ariana Faina relayed people's fear of leaving their homes. Bob Beggs stressed the importance of the hotline in protecting the dignity and safety of residents, while student Sandro Bautista voiced the need for support for the undocumented community.
Lorena Melgarejo, Director of FIABA, pointed out the hotline's long-standing presence and the network's efforts to support families affected by ICE, including verifying information through the hotline and accompanying people to their immigration court appointments. To date, the network has accompanied 525 families to court proceedings and has distributed cards to the community that list their constitutional rights.
Lorena Melgarejo and Abby Taylor pointed out that Daly City has the highest rate of detentions in the County and expressed a desire to have a conversation with the Mayor to raise awareness about available resources and to support families in avoiding homelessness. Speakers thanked the Council for their time and for considering their requests.
