Agenda #: 5.4
Meeting Date: September 19, 2023
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Daniel Fox, City Manager
TITLE: HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH PROCLAMATION.

STRATEGIC
GOAL: Open, Engaged & Responsive Government
RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt the Proclamation declaring September 15 – October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month.

BACKGROUND:

Each year, Americans observe and celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 as a time to celebrate the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico, and Chile observe their independence on September 16, and 18, respectively.

The observance started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and in 1988 was expanded to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
