PROCLAMATION

HONORING THE DOS PALOS SACRED HEART CHURCH
UPON ITS 100th ANNIVERSARY
WHEREAS, the Sacred Heart Church was established on November 29, 1924 in Dos Palos, a farming community about 50 miles northwest of Fresno, where old timers say Dos Palos was named for two lone poplars adorning an otherwise ban-en desert more than a century ago; and WHEREAS, the first church was a little wooden structure built by Presbyterians in 1903 and moved from a corner of the high school land to the site of the present church hall, where the land under the new church sat on the former Fresno Slough, required extensive pilings driven into the sandy soil to support the new structure; and
WHERAS, Rev. Patrick McCabe, the first pastor, was appointed by the newly installed first bishop of the Diocese of Monterey-Fresno, the Most Reverend John B. MacGinley, Father McCabe ministered to the mostly Italian and Portuguese immigrant population of both Dos Palos and Firebaugh; and
WHEREAS, today in the Catholic community of Dos Palos, seldom a day goes by that either the church or the parish hall is not filled with some parish activity, whether it be junior high or high school youth group, or from parish organizations to all the various ministries; NOW

THEREFORE,
BE IT PROCLAIMED, that I, April Hogue, 28th Mayor of the City of Dos Palos, do hereby honor the Dos Palos Sacred Heart Church on its 100th anniversary on Saturday, November 10, 2024.
