Re: Indigenous People's Day
I would encourage the City of Downey to join the many cities regionally, state wide, and nationally in establishing Indigenous People's Day. Having been involved in the establishment of Indigenous People's Day in Anaheim, and being born many years ago in Downey, | was interested in seeing the city of Downey consider this special day.
Many of our residence, regionally and nationally do not give much thought to the peoples who cared for these lands long before others came from many other lands and nations. This does not help ueknow our history, or honor the people who not only came before, but are still here today. Too often these people(s) are invisible today, and the outcome of this is to the detriment of us all. A good and helpful step in this is the establishment oJIndigenous People's Day.
I have heard the expressed feelings of changing from Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day, and honor these feelings. However, it should also be noted that Columbus Day often gives an impression that ianot completely accurate. First. Columbus did not actually come towhat ionow called the United 8tab*a, and the discussion of Discovery can give the impression of lands unoccupied. We all know that was not the case, and so the establishment of Indigenous People's Day helps us gain not only better perspective, but emore accurate sense ofwho weare amonation, state, and cities.
I urge the City Council of Downey to establish such a day and help honor the people who are still with us today, in this case the Tongva, and help open a conversation that leads to a more positive and healthy future for everyone.

Subject: Agenda item 31
Date: Tuesday, January 25, 2022 2:01:52 PM
My name is Ivette Xochiyotl
I would like to make a comment on agenda Item 3 1
I want to begin by honoring and recognizing that we are all guests to this sacred, unceded Indigenous land
that we know today as the the City of Down; which is Tongva & Kish land. I want to honor their people, past, present and future.
Which brings me to why I am submitting this comment today.
I am expressing my support to the agenda item 31 to proclaim October Indigenous Peoples month.
Indigenous people are not a thing of the past. We are still here. Always have and always will.
As First Nations, we do have rights to preserve our heritage, culture, ancestral knowledge and ensure our children will grow having access to them.
By Internal law, We have the United Nations Declaration on the rights of Indigenous people, then adopted by the US in 2017, which is the American Declaration on the rights of Indigenous people.
skin, our languages, we are a direct reflection of the land itself.
We, Indigenous people of Turtle Island have the right to pass on this knowledge to future generations and they have the right to know who they truly are and where they come from.
Celebrating us for a month is a very small step towards the right direction to reconciliation and the ongoing cultural genocide we still live through today.
I highly recommend you read the declarations mentioned above and feel free to reach out to local indigenous people to work on this measure.

Agenda Item 27 meeting of 1/25/2022
Date:
Tuesday, January 25, 2022 4:42:25 PM
Good Evening Mayor an Member of the City Council,
I am writing in regards to agenda item No. 27. As you received and file this report I would to suggests and recommend that the City Council consider eradicating the ground squirrel/gopher infestation that Rio San Gabriel Park has had for decades. In addition to the settlement of the ground, the ground squirrel/gopher holes present an on -going challenge for players and the continued risk for ankle and knee injuries. In this regard as the City fences off the park to allow the hydroseed to grow, this will be the ideal time for the City to include plan to eradicate the ground squirrel/gopher problem.
Thank you for your consideration.
