Policy.
79MOURPH910
The Downey Fire Department responds to roughly 9,000 medical emergencies every year. Every medical emergency requires City staff to respond, in an ambulance, to provide care, assist with the medical needs of the citizens and transport patients to the hospital.
Currently, the ambulance fleet has a 19 year old ambulance with 102,000 miles and a 14 year old ambulance with 148,000 miles. Both ambulances are used as reserve apparatus and put in service when a frontline ambulance goes out of service for maintenance or repair, and when community needs indicate putting an additional ambulance in service.
The two new ambulances will be utilized as frontline units and will be in service every day.
When they get added to the fleet and put in service, the two older ambulances will be removed from the fleet for appropriate disposition. At that time, staff will designate two ambulances, currently being used as frontline units, to be placed in reserve status.
