BACKGROUND
The City of Downey’s 150th (D150) Celebration event will be hosted this year to commemorate the City’s rich history. After the City was founded in 1873 by John Downey, an Irish immigrant, the City grew in sporadic leaps. In the 1950’s Downey had grown to a community of 90,000 residents and quickly became a leader in the aviation industry. By the 1970’s, Downey was home to Boeing Company, whose facilities were the birthplace for the Apollo Space Program. Today, the City is a full-service municipal organization and is home to nationally-recognized schools, as well numerous parks, and various amenities.
