SUBJECT: APPOINTMENTS TO THE 2023/2024 DOWNEY YOUTH COMMISSION IN DISTRICT 3
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The City Council will consider appointing two applicants to the Downey Youth Commission in District 3. The Downey Youth Commission is comprised of 15 seats and is entering its 13th year. A total of 14 applicants were received for 9 vacancies this year.
Each Commissioner entering grades 9-11 shall serve a two-year term and may be reappointed for no more than one additional term of two years, provided they continue to meet the eligibility requirements. Youth Commissioners in grade 12 are limited to a one- year term.
RECOMMENDATION
That the City Council
1.Approve the appointment of Alexis Avalos and Sofia Vela to the 2023/2024 Downey Youth Commission for District 3.
BACKGROUND
The Downey City Council formed the Downey Youth Commission in 2011 with the goals of:
-Leadership development
-Civic/local government education (including planning Youth in Government Day) -Providing input to the City Council regarding youth issues -Completion of annual assignments/priorities from the City Council Similar to other City advisory commissions, the Downey Youth Commission is a volunteer advisory commission, and the commissioners do not receive compensation for their time.
Each councilmember selects three applicants from their corresponding district to fill their vacancies.
There are currently 2 vacancies in District 3, as 2 members in District 3 were no longer able to serve as of October 2023. The City Council District 3 representative reviewed the applications and provided recommendations for these appointments.
