Subject: Installation of Lights at Furman Park for Youth Baseball League Dear Downey City Council Board Members,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you as a concerned member and coach within our community's youth baseball league. Our league has become a cornerstone for young athletes to learn, grow, and enjoy the game of baseball. However, there is one critical element that could significantly enhance our children's experience and safety: the installation of lights at our community park.
The absence of proper lighting limits our ability to schedule games and practices during the early evening hours.
This can be especially challenging during the fall when the days are shorter, and many parents cannot bring their children to participate in daytime due to work commitments. With lights installed, we could extend our hours of operation, providing more flexibility for families and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to play, regardless of their parents' schedules.
Furthermore, illuminated fields would enhance safety for our children. Well -lit areas can deter potential negative activities in the park after dark, creating a safer environment for everyone. It would also reduce the risk of injuries during evening games or practices, as players would have better visibility.
The impact of this improvement goes beyond just our league; it would be a boon for the entire community. A lit park would become a hub for evening activities, fostering a stronger, more connected community. It would also provide a space for other sports and community events, maximizing the park's usage and benefitting a broader audience.
Investing in lights for our park is an investment in our children's future. It's an opportunity for us to show them that their community believes in them and their potential, not just in sports, but in all their evening activities.
I trust you share our sentiment on the significance of our local park here in Downey. For many of us, especially those who have the deep-rooted privilege of being born and raised in this community, the park's transformation is not just a matter of civic pride but a personal journey. It stands as a testament to our collective efforts and a beautiful legacy that fosters interaction and togetherness. This place, which we've watched flourish, is more than a park; it's a vibrant chapter in our lives and an essential part of our community's fabric.
Thank you for considering our request. We are confident that this enhancement to our community park will leave a lasting positive impact on our youth and all community members.
Sincerely,
Sergio Campos

Subject: Furman Park Lights
Dear City Council,
My name is Jesse Cervantes and I am a resident of district 3 in the city of Downey. My son has been at Northwest Downey Little League for the past 3 seasons and absolutely loves it. He recently played in the leagues President game which has been one of the highlights of his 9 year old season. I wish I would've attended his games but I did not because I work, The issue I have with no lights at Furman Park is the fact that I do not get off of work until 6:OOPM and by the time I make it to the park during the week, it is dark and the games are over. I don't get how surrounding cities like Cudahy, Bell, Bell Gardens, etc have league with parks with lights, but not Downey. It's very sad that the city would oppose lights at Furman Park because of a few residents that probably don't have any kids to begin with. They do not represent us nor our kids.
I voted for Dorothy because she said she was for lights at the debate. Is that not the case anymore? It is election season and I will be keeping tabs on how you guys vote on this issue.
Best,
Jesse Cervantes
