To the Downey City Council,
As a Downey resident that lives a block from Furman Park, I am completely IN FAVOR of adding lights to the ball fields at Furman Park. While the lights may be in an inconvenience to those residents immediately adjacent to the park, the overwhelming positives that field lights will bring to Furman Park, NorthWest Downey Little League, and the entire city should outweigh the inconveniences to some neighbors who all chose to live adjacent to a park.
I encourage the city council to set aside funds to help those who need mitigation features for errant foul balls or additional light coming from the park (e.g.: netting, privacy fencing, shades, etc).
The benefits of adding lights for the ball fields are really endless. I will try to outline just a few here:
• Making baseball fields more accessible to our hundreds if not thousands of youth baseball, softball, and tee -ball players will benefit the residents of Downey. • NWDLL has supported thousands of Downey residents for generations and helping that organization develop will allow them to continue to do so for generations to come. • A well lit park will deter criminal behavior, thereby making the park safer for all. Another primary objective of any city council with regards to their constituents. • The city council can make good on its promise to support youth in our city by making sports (baseball, softball, tee -ball in this case) more accessible with lights on the fields. We all know that the more kids are into sports, the less likely they are to get into trouble. This in turn makes our city safer, develops thousand of kids in youth team sports for generations and thereby increasing the quality of life for all of Downey residents.
• The city can also expand its Concerts in the Park with the additional lighting at Furman Park. Even though the lighting will concentrate on the ball fields, the possibilities to expand city events at Furman Park, including the concerts, increase with the presence of lights.
I thank you for your time,

Opposition to the proposed installation of Sports Lighting at Furman Park Baseball Fields Dear City Council Members,
My name is Angelica Siordia and I'm writing to express concern with the proposed installation of Sports Lighting at the Furman Park Baseball fields on the agenda for the 1/23/2024 City Council Meeting. I am a Downey homeowner and live on Wiley Burke Ave just behind Furman Park. I am opposed to this idea as I fear the impact of the light pollution to my neighborhood, which would be in the line of sight from my backyard and bedroom window, but also that this will open up the park for night play/games which will also create additional noise pollution in the neighborhood.
I am in favor of city parks and what they provide to the community but my neighbors and I have already seen the negative impact to our block due to the additional baseball games. Le., no parking on our block, cars blocking our driveways, trash left behind on sidewalks, and noise from few people that play loud music via speakers while setting up for games. I implore you to seriously consider the downsides of installing this lighting, particularly how this will impact the residents who live directly behind the baseball fields, before moving forward with this proposal.
Thank you for your consideration,
Angelica Siordia
