BACKGROUND
The Downey Fire Department is an “all risk” emergency response provider. Some emergencies, such as fires and hazardous materials incidents, require first responders to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to prevent serious injuries caused by inhaling smoke and other dangerous gases. An SCBA is a complex, portable piece of equipment that is worn by Firefighters whenever they enter an environment that presents a breathing hazard . The SCBA consists of a harness, hose, regulators, face mask and a compressed air cylinder. The compressed air cylinder is a high-pressure cylinder, made of aluminum, wrapped in carbon fibers, that stores breathing quality air to be delivered to the Firefighter, through the hose and regulator, whenever the face mask is worn. The air stored in an SCBA cylinder will provide breathing air for approximately 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the fitness level and exertion of the Firefighter wearing the SCBA.
