The only word that comes to mind when I think of the city council members is cowards. Every single person before me is a coward.

Last June, Pride flags were removed, and the council lacked the backbone to speak out against the ongoing genocide that has led to the events of this week. I am absolutely disgusted by the fact that you are all sitting on these chairs while ICE kidnaps families and people. In a city where over 80% of the population comprises communities of color, you are allowing ICE to terrorize the very people you pledge to serve. Don't sit here and tell us to be calm or that there's nothing to worry about. Every council member needs to stop being a coward and make sure ICE stays out of our city.

Will the city be investigating the legality of these ICE operations and whether civil rights were violated? And just as importantly, will the city offer or help connect those impacted with legal resources or support? Families in Downey deserve to feel safe and supported, not terrorized or forgotten. We're hopeful that with your voice and leadership, Downey can take a stand for due process and dignity for all residents.

Hello my name is Marisela Martinez and I been a resident of Downey a little over 17yrs. I want to address something that weighs heavily on my heart: the recent climate of fear gripping our community due to unverified ice raids occurring in our neighborhoods.

Many of us have witnessed individuals patrolling our streets in civilian and unmarked vehicles, who do not identify themselves as law enforcement or government officials. This has created an atmosphere of anxiety and unrest. What's more alarming is the reports of racial profiling and harassment that members of our community are experiencing. As a person of Mexican descent, I feel that my mere appearance may expose me and my family to unwarranted scrutiny.

This situation has escalated to a point where I no longer feel safe —many of us no longer feel safe in our own homes and neighborhoods. The fear of being targeted or harassed because of who we are or how we look is something NO AMERICAN CITIZEN should have to endure.

I urge you all to take IMMEDIATE action to provide clarity about who is patrolling our community and under what authority. We need our leaders to speak up and take steps to protect us from discrimination, harassment, or intimidation. It is crucial that we establish guidelines that ensure the safety and fair treatment of every resident.

Thank you for your time, and I hope to see meaningful action taken to restore our sense of safety and community.
