It is a horrible site when you exit Florence and you see all of this. I wish the city could do something about it. I see it all the time for months
Sincerely,

I was at Apollo park today.
There was a young man sitting in one of the electric carts, staring at his cell phone. This is a poor use of taxpayer dollars. This employee should be replaced with somebody who wants to do a productive day's work.
Sincerely,

CONSTRUCTION CONTRACT FOR THE DOWNEY GRAMMAR SCHOOL ARCH
REPAIR PROJECT

Dear Council Members,
On behalf of the members of The Downey Conservancy and all those who value Downey's cultural heritage and the preservation of our significant historic, cultural and architectural resources, I am asking that you show your support for the restoration of the Downey Grammar School Arch and approve Item 6 on the Consent Calendar this evening.
We have been advocating for the restoration of this civic landmark for over a year and we are grateful for the support and hard work that has brought this project to you for your approval. We commend the leadership of our Director of Community Development, Irma Huitron, and her staff who have responded positively to all of our concerns and have kept us updated throughout the process.
The Downey Grammar School was built in the summer of 1916. The architect was the noted John C. Austin who lived in Pasadena, but maintained a vacation home, the "Mulberry Tree Ranch", at the present-day northwest corner of Gardendale and Clark. After designing our
Downey Grammar School, Mr. Austin went on to design the Griffith Observatory, the Shrine Auditorium and collaborated on the Los Angeles City Hall. The arch is all that remains of Mr.
Austin's work here in Downey. It was the only part salvaged when the building, which was converted to our first city hall, police station and library in 1957, was demolished in 1984 to build the current city headquarters.
We whole-heartedly recommend that you approve the funding for the Downey Grammar School Arch Repair Project, saving it from further destruction and restoring it properly, in accordance with historic preservation standards, to its former glory.
Thank you very much!
Sincerely,
Kathy Perez
