What knowledge do you have of the programs offered through the Parks and Community Services Department? Have you or a family member participated in a program sponsored by the Department? The Parks and Community Services Department in Dublin offers a wide range of programs designed to serve all age groups, from youth to seniors. For young residents, there are sports leagues, arts and crafts classes, dance, and educational camps that encourage both recreation and learning. Programs like The Wave Summer Camp provide kids with engaging activities, including swimming, games, and themed days, promoting both fitness and social connection.

For adults, the Department offers a variety of fitness classes, arts workshops, and community events that cater to diverse interests. The Department’s focus on lifelong learning is evident in programs like cooking classes, yoga, and outdoor activities that support wellness and community engagement.

The Dublin Senior Center also plays a vital role by providing seniors with programs that promote active and healthy aging, such as exercise classes, technology workshops, and social activities like bingo and book clubs. These offerings help reduce isolation and provide meaningful connections for older residents.

Additionally, Dublin hosts seasonal events through the Parks and Community Services Department, such as the St. Patrick’s Day Festival, Splatter Festival, and Farmers’ Markets, which bring the community together and celebrate Dublin’s diverse heritage. Overall, the Department’s programs contribute greatly to community wellness, inclusivity, and quality of life for residents of all ages and backgrounds.

Yes, we as a family have participated in most of the programs including St. Patrick's day parade, Activities in Dublin Wave and overnight camping offered by the city. We have been regularly renting Dublin city parks to conduct various activities.

How do you feel about user fees for recreation programs and park/facility reservations? I recognize that user fees for recreation programs and park or facility reservations are an essential component in funding Dublin’s high- quality parks and community services. These fees help maintain facilities, expand program offerings, and ensure the sustainability of resources that benefit all residents. However, it’s important to keep these fees fair and accessible so they do not create barriers for individuals or families who may be financially limited.

To balance financial sustainability with inclusivity, the City could continue exploring options like sliding scale fees, discounts, or scholarships for residents in need. This approach would allow Dublin’s parks and programs to remain accessible to a diverse range of participants.

Additionally, offering some free or low-cost events and open days can provide opportunities for all residents to engage with City resources, regardless of income.

Overall, I believe that a thoughtful and equitable fee structure supports the community’s long-term goals of inclusivity and accessibility while ensuring that Dublin’s parks and programs can continue to thrive.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community but unpopular with neighbors, residents, or organizations?
I believe that making decisions for the overall good of the community sometimes requires making tough choices that may not initially be popular with all residents or groups. When a decision has the potential to positively impact Dublin’s long-term well-being, sustainability, or inclusivity, it’s essential to prioritize these benefits while being sensitive to the concerns of those who may be affected.

In situations like this, transparent communication is crucial. I would strive to openly share the reasoning behind the decision, listen to feedback, and, where possible, address specific concerns to ease the transition or find compromises. Engaging with neighbors, residents, and organizations early in the decision-making process can help build understanding and trust, even if consensus is not possible.

Ultimately, I feel that leadership sometimes requires making thoughtful, forward-thinking decisions that serve the greater good, knowing that the positive impact on Dublin’s future will often justify initial challenges or discomfort. Making well-informed, balanced choices that reflect the community’s broader needs is central to responsible governance.

I also believe my focus on sustainable practices could make a meaningful impact by supporting initiatives that protect and enhance our natural spaces, so they can be enjoyed for generations to come. My goal is to advocate for programs and policies that balance immediate needs with long-term benefits, ensuring that Dublin’s parks and community services contribute to a high quality of life for all residents.

Through thoughtful planning and community input, I am dedicated to helping create a vibrant, inclusive environment that reflects Dublin’s Why are you interested in serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission? What knowledge do you have of the City-owned community facilities in Dublin, such as the Dublin Senior Center, Shannon Community Center, or The Wave? Have you or a family member rented facilities with the City of Dublin? I am familiar with the City-owned community facilities in Dublin and appreciate the important roles they play in supporting residents’ quality of life and fostering community engagement. The Dublin Senior Center provides a welcoming environment where older adults can participate in fitness classes, social activities, and educational workshops. This center is essential in helping seniors stay active, connected, and engaged with the community.

The Shannon Community Center is a versatile facility that hosts a wide range of events, from community gatherings and cultural events to recreational classes and private celebrations. With its flexible spaces and scenic location near the creek and Shannon Park, it’s a popular spot that brings people together in meaningful ways.

The Wave at Emerald Glen Park is another key asset, particularly for families and youth. This aquatic and recreation complex offers pools, waterslides, and a splash zone, along with fitness classes and swim lessons that promote health and water safety. The Wave also hosts summer camps and family-friendly events, making it a valuable resource for recreation and community bonding.

Each of these facilities reflects Dublin’s commitment to providing high-quality spaces and programs that meet the needs of residents of all ages. I am excited about the opportunity to support and contribute to the ongoing success of these facilities, ensuring they remain accessible, well-maintained, and responsive to the community’s needs.

How can the City provide better equity and inclusion to all persons that use our parks, trails, and facilities, and access our programs?
The City of Dublin can further promote equity and inclusion by focusing on accessibility, representation, and community engagement across its parks, trails, facilities, and programs. One effective approach is to gather direct feedback from a diverse range of residents to identify any barriers they face in accessing City resources. Hosting regular town halls, conducting surveys in multiple languages, and collaborating with local organizations can ensure that all voices are heard and that programming reflects the community’s diverse needs.

To make facilities and programs more accessible, the City could enhance ADA compliance, ensure wheelchair-friendly paths, and incorporate sensory-friendly spaces in parks and community centers. Offering program information in multiple languages and formats, including Braille and audio, would further improve accessibility for non-English speakers and individuals with visual or auditory impairments.

Financial accessibility is another key component of equity. Expanding sliding-scale fees, scholarships, or free programming can allow residents from all economic backgrounds to participate fully. For example, offering free fitness classes, community events, or low-cost youth programs could ensure that everyone has an opportunity to enjoy Dublin’s parks and services. 571
Finally, designing culturally diverse programs that reflect Dublin’s demographics can help foster inclusion and celebrate the community’s diversity. Events, cultural festivals, and programs that highlight different traditions, holidays, and cuisines can make all residents feel valued and connected. By prioritizing these measures, Dublin can create an inclusive environment where everyone feels welcomed and has the opportunity to benefit from the City’s parks and community services. 572

What knowledge do you have of the programs offered through the Parks and Community Services Department? Have you or a family member participated in a program sponsored by the Department? There are many programs offered through the several divisions within the Parks and Community Services Department, such as, Preschool and after-school programs; youth and adult fitness classes; Jr. Warriors Basketball Programs, and year-round swim lessons and fitness swimming in The Wave at Emerald Glen Park. etc.

How do you feel about user fees for recreation programs and park/facility reservations? I think those user fees are reasonable and necessary in order for us to provide all the residents in Dublin with more recreation programs continuously, and better park/facility to make our city a great place to live in California.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community but unpopular with neighbors, residents, or organizations?
If the decision is good for the community but unpopular with neighbors, residents or organizations, I would consider the long-term impact of the decision of the community, and I will do my best to keep an effective communication with the community members and organizations to ensure that my communicate the reasons for my decision clearly and transparently to the community. Of course, I will also get input from the community to understand their perspectives and concerns; in addition, I will explore compromise solutions or alternative approaches which may create a win-win situation in the future.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Parks and Community Services Commission? The most important contribution I can make as a member of the Parks and Community Services Commission is to act as a dedicated steward of community well-being, advocating for and shaping policies and programs that enhance the quality of life for residents; to act as a bridge between the community and local government by engaging with residents to understand their needs, preferences and concerns related to parks and community services.

Why are you interested in serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission? As 13 years resident living in Dublin, I love to contribute myself to our community services to promote community well-being. And, as a 15+ years real estate brokerage owner in bay area, I believe that the commission roles offer opportunities for leadership development.

Therefore, in the past few years, I had volunteered actively in our community in Dublin. In the past, I served in Dublin school district budget committee, and served in Dublin High School and Dougherty Elementary as a school site council member, and a vice-president of PFC in Dougherty Elementary as well.

The Dublin Senior Center is the best meeting place for all the seniors, and it provides them with different classes as well; and Shannon Community Center is the place providing everybody in Dublin with a banquet hall, a full catering kitchen, preschool classrooms, meeting rooms which can be rented by residents. My own kids used to attend preschool classes in Shannon Community Center, and swimming classes in The Wave many years ago.

How can the City provide better equity and inclusion to all persons that use our parks, trails, and facilities, and access our programs?
The City can promote equity and inclusion by addressing diverse community needs. This includes improving accessibility through ADA- compliant facilities, multilingual signage, and adaptive programs; expanding affordable and culturally inclusive programming; and fostering representation by hiring diverse staff and engaging underrepresented groups in decision-making. Additionally, we shall ask for input and feedback from our community to better understand all the community members' needs and preferences in order to create safe, welcoming spaces with amenities for all abilities and ages ensures everyone feels valued. Application Questions
What knowledge do you have of the programs offered through the Parks and Community Services Department? Have you or a family member participated in a program sponsored by the Department? As someone who enjoys outdoors, I frequently take walks and bike through our parks. I love them. When my son, Aiden, played in the Little League, I watched and volunteered for their practices and games at different baseball fields. Aiden is also a big fan of our BMX bike park, and he and his friends spend many hours fixing the trails. Together, we participated in a volunteer event, sponsored by the city, to clean up the bike park, a couple of year ago on the Earth Day.

I am a friend of Scott Roberts, who used to be a Parks commissioner in San Ramon. We talked a bit about the work involving the commission. I have read through a few commission meeting agendas and meeting minutes. There are budget and park development discussions. However, I don't have an overall understanding of the programs offered, nor do I have a clear view of the mission or the commission.

How do you feel about user fees for recreation programs and park/facility reservations? I'd like to consider the question from multiple angles. 1) I understand there are always fees to cover maintenance and sta ffing of services. I'd like to better understand how our fees are charged comparing to our neighboring cities? I believe our patrons might have different options across the region. 2) Then, i'd like to better understand what programs are most popular and utilized frequently, is there ways to optimize our o fferings to best make use of our facilities and staffs while addressing the service demands from our city residents and beyond? 3) Also, do we want to review our budget and fee structure to see if we can o ffer any bundle pricings (like a season pass, etc)? 4) What is the impact to the community when we charge fees? Will the fees be disproportionally burdening a segment of our community? Such seniors, or youth, or under-privileged.

In general, as someone who studies economics, I think fees could be applied if the demand for our parks and communities services significantly outpace our supply, and therefore, fees can help moderate the demand, help prioritization, and fund future developments.

Otherwise, I think our parks and services should be charged at a minimal as a city's service to all our residents.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community but unpopular with neighbors, residents, or organizations?
As an example of a decision that is for the overall good of the community but unpopular, I can think of our national debt. A reduction of national debt (at the current rate) is good because it is unsustainable and bad for our future generations. However, it is unpopular because it involves spending cuts and raising taxes.

As someone who studied economics, and uses datas to make difficult decisions at work, I'd feel comfortable to make a hard decision if the data supports it. However, as a part of execution, we need to influence our community, get people's support, and watch closely how such decisions would impact our community, and make necessary adjustments if needed.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Parks and Community Services Commission? I am a strategic person who can put together a big picture, an ideal state, plan, and execute.

First of all, I would like to make outreach effort to our communities (many different communities in different regions or of different ethnic groups).

In addition, I'd like to better understand what we already have, what the budget looks like, and what our residents' awareness and sentiments are towards our programs. Are there good examples of successes and are there clear pain points? Moreover, I'd like to discuss and learn from the staffs and fellow commissioners how we can promote the usage of our services, what improvements or adjustments can we continue to make to better serve our community.

Why are you interested in serving on the Parks and Community Services Commission? I love our city. I actually think we have done a wonderful job to build the parks, sports fields, carving out lands for reservation. I see happy people walking, biking, playing basketball, baseball, and cricket. They are out when the sun rises, or when the evening cools. Big crowds during weekends. Young parents taking care of their little ones, and seniors hang out in the open, under the shades of trees. I want to contribute and volunteer to do my part to give back.

In what organizations are you currently a member? Please list.

What knowledge do you have of the City-owned community facilities in Dublin, such as the Dublin Senior Center, Shannon Community Center, or The Wave? Have you or a family member rented facilities with the City of Dublin? My mother-in-law lives across from the Senior Center, and we have attended the Chinese New Year celebrations there. We have also rented Heritage Sunday School Barn and Senior Center for local events.

How can the City provide better equity and inclusion to all persons that use our parks, trails, and facilities, and access our programs?
Dublin is a vibrant and young city and it includes people from different age groups, ethnic backgrounds, and with a diverse set of cultural, political, and economical interests. I think there are a few ways to provide better equity and inclusions:
1) Raising awareness of our programs and events through multiple social media channels and in di fferent languages is a good starting point. 2) Outreach to and work with local non-pro fit organizations. 3) It is also important to always think and plan carefully of the recipients and targeted audiences of our programs and events. 577

Application Questions
Why are you interested in serving on the Planning Commission? I’m deeply invested in the future of our Dublin community and believe the Planning Commission plays a vital role in guiding sustainable growth. With my background as an Engineer / Technology Leader working for a fortune 500 company and my commitment to balancing development with environmental stewardship, I see this as an opportunity to contribute positively to my city. I’m especially passionate about green space preservation, as I believe these are essential for long-term livability. I’d like to bring a collaborative, forward-thinking approach to the Commission and help make our community an even better place to live.

What is your knowledge of and experience in Planning and Zoning? I’m interested in serving on the Planning Commission because I’m passionate about the future of our community. While I don’t have formal training in city planning, I believe my skills in teamwork and problem-solving, along with my commitment to this community, would make me a valuable addition. I have been living 20+ years in the Bay Area and have tremendous experience collaborating with various teams. I have an MBA degree in General Management and thinking out of the box and ensuring we have a 360 degree view of points raised/discussed is my strength. I’m ready to learn and contribute, especially on issues like sustainable growth and preserving our community’s character. I’m excited about the opportunity to help shape our city for generations to come.

Do you have any experience in urban design, architecture or landscaping? If yes, please describe your experience.

While I don’t have direct experience in urban design, architecture, or landscaping, I have been actively involved in several community service projects organized by the City of Dublin, including park beautification and creekside cleanup through organizations like Dublin 4-H. I'm excited to learn and contribute to Dublin’s vision and would be glad to participate in discussions with local residents to hear their feedback and perspectives as well.

What experience, if any, do you have serving on boards, commissions or task forces? Please explain.

Although I don’t have direct experience serving on city boards or commissions, my background includes significant volunteer work with Dublin 4-H, where I collaborate closely with both adults and youth on community-driven projects. I’ve also volunteered at numerous city events and participated in various community service projects, which has given me a strong foundation in working alongside diverse groups and understanding community needs. My ability to work collaboratively and my dedication to serving the community will allow me to quickly adapt, learn, and effectively contribute to the Planning Commission.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community, but unpopular with some neighbors? I understand that making decisions that benefit the entire community can sometimes be challenging, especially when they may not align with the desires of certain individuals. However, I believe my role would be to prioritize the community’s best interests. While I value and respect diverse opinions, I am committed to making well-informed decisions that align with the city’s long-term goals and serve the greater good. I would approach such decisions by reviewing relevant data, consulting with stakeholders, and carefully considering the impact on all community members. If a decision is unpopular, I believe clear and respectful communication is essential to help neighbors understand the reasoning behind it and to show that their concerns are heard and respected.

How can the City better ensure that the viewpoints and perspectives of our diverse population are represented when making decisions about city planning?
To make sure everyone’s voice is heard in city planning, it helps to have different ways for people to share their ideas—whether that’s through in-person events, online platforms, or even a quick mobile survey. Partnering with trusted local leaders and community groups can help spread the word, and offering materials in multiple languages or hosting meetings in familiar, easy-to-reach places makes it easier for more people to join in. Using data to spot who might be missing from the conversation lets the city reach out to those communities, and forming a diversity council keeps a wide range of perspectives involved at every step. By showing people how their input makes a difference and keeping things simple with visuals and plain language, the city can build trust and make sure planning decisions reflect everyone’s needs.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Planning Commission? As a member of the Planning Commission, my most important contribution is to apply my experience as a Senior Technology executive to foster thoughtful and informed decision-making. Leveraging skills in teamwork, collaboration, and technology, I can help bridge perspectives from various community members, ensuring that all voices are heard and considered. By listening carefully to all parties and integrating sustainable growth principles, I aim to contribute to a planning process that reflects the values and needs of our community. My goal is to make balanced, data-driven decisions that prioritize long-term quality of life, supporting both current and future residents through innovative, sustainable development.

How can the City better ensure that the viewpoints and perspectives of our diverse population are represented when making decisions about city planning?
The City can ensure diverse perspectives are represented in planning by conducting inclusive outreach, hosting culturally sensitive forums with language support, and recruiting diverse members for boards and committees. Over the past 23 years, I have closely observed the city's growth and development and gained an understanding of how planning decisions impact neighborhoods, infrastructure, and community well-being. What experience, if any, do you have serving on boards, commissions or task forces? Please explain.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community, but unpopular with some neighbors? I believe that decisions made for the overall good of the community are essential, even if they may not be popular with everyone. As a board member of my HOA, I’ve learned that community leadership sometimes requires balancing individual preferences with long-term goals that benefit the larger group. I approach these situations by listening carefully to residents’ concerns, ensuring they feel heard and respected, and communicating the reasons behind each decision transparently. My goal is always to find solutions that align with the community’s best interests while addressing as many concerns as possible, even if it’s not always possible to achieve unanimous support.

How can the City better ensure that the viewpoints and perspectives of our diverse population are represented when making decisions about city planning?
The City can better represent our diverse population by actively involving people from all backgrounds in the planning process. One way is to hold community forums and listening sessions in different neighborhoods and at accessible times, with materials available in multiple languages, so that everyone feels invited to participate. Improving communication through digital platforms, social media, and local newsletters would also help keep residents in the loop and make it easier for them to engage.

Additionally, the City could set up advisory panels that include a variety of perspectives—such as from youth, seniors, and minority groups— to provide input on key issues. Regular surveys, available both online and in-person, could also give people an easy way to share their thoughts.

Overall, creating these opportunities for open dialogue and acting on community feedback would ensure that decisions truly reflect the values and needs of everyone in our community.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Planning Commission? My most important contribution as a member of the Planning Commission would be to serve as a dedicated advocate for the needs of the community. I believe in making planning decisions that prioritize the well-being and long-term interests of our residents, ensuring that growth and development align with what’s best for those who live here. I bring a balanced approach, combining a commitment to community feedback with a thoughtful understanding of sustainable growth. My goal would be to contribute in a way that keeps the community’s voice at the center of every decision, fostering a city that reflects and supports the people it serves. 588

Why are you interested in serving on the Planning Commission? I am an architect with over 13 years of experience, and I am deeply passionate about reviewing plans related to land use, zoning, and community development to ensure growth aligns with a community's long-term vision. Serving on a planning commission offers a unique opportunity to directly influence how a community grows and develops, ensuring that public spaces, infrastructure, and housing are designed thoughtfully and inclusively. I am particularly interested in promoting environmental sustainability and urban design that balances development with ecological responsibility.

What is your knowledge of and experience in Planning and Zoning? While I don't have direct experience on a planning commission, I have spent 10 years working closely with planning departments in several Bay Area cities during my tenure with a petroleum construction company. This experience has given me valuable insight into the planning process, and I am confident in my ability to quickly learn and adapt with minimal supervision.

Do you have any experience in urban design, architecture or landscaping? If yes, please describe your experience.

I am an Architect with a Master's degree in Construction Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL. During my Bachelor’s program in Architecture, I specialized in Urban Design and Landscaping. With over 10 years of experience in the Oil and Gas sector, I have expertise in design and compliance with both federal and local codes, particularly in Northern CA. Additionally, I have 3 years of experience working with a prominent architecture firm in Santa Clara, CA.

I have collaborated extensively with Planning Departments across multiple cities in the Bay Area, facilitating the issuance of permits and approvals. I am also highly skilled in reading and interpreting blueprints and maps, ensuring accuracy and adherence to project specifications.

What experience, if any, do you have serving on boards, commissions or task forces? Please explain.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community, but unpopular with some neighbors? Making decisions for the greater good of the community, even if unpopular, can be tough but necessary. It’s about balancing long-term benefits with local concerns. While such decisions should be based on fairness and careful consideration, it’s crucial to address affected parties’ concerns, communicate transparently to minimize negative impacts. Committee need to have a clear reasoning and a commitment to fairness, to take tough decision for the greater good of the community.

How can the City better ensure that the viewpoints and perspectives of our diverse population are represented when making decisions about city planning?
Future developments in Dublin should prioritize preserving green spaces and ensuring they are not diminished by new construction.

Additionally, it’s essential that infrastructure plans effectively manage traffic, particularly during peak hours, to maintain smooth and efficient movement throughout the city. Balancing growth with sustainability and livability will be crucial for Dublin’s continued success.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Planning Commission? As a member of the Planning Commission, my key contributions would be to advocate for the community, ensure decisions reflect diverse needs, and promote long-term sustainability. I will provide my informed input (to best of my knowledge) that strengthens the community and ensures Planning Commission remain valuable and accessible. 598

I have only personal experience in landscaping, that did include water control measures as well as efficient gardening.

What experience, if any, do you have serving on boards, commissions or task forces? Please explain.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community, but unpopular with some neighbors? I have always been able to make sound decisions with the principle of beneficence at the forefront, knowing every solution will not be everyone's top choice. We must make the decision that is the most good for the most amount of people, and that is something I feel very comfortable with.

How can the City better ensure that the viewpoints and perspectives of our diverse population are represented when making decisions about city planning?
By inviting opinions and experiences of those outside of the expected or historical description of the role that is to be filled. Growing up in the midwest, and having lived in Florida and now California, I know what it feels like to live in places that aren't Dublin. It is possible to have a well run city with good planning and a diverse population. in fact, I think our diversity is one of the things that makes Dublin great, and ensuring all experiences, whether it be work, personal, organizational, or other, are taken into account when considering commissioners.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Planning Commission? I would be a forward thinker, bringing the outside perspectives of living in the midwest and east coast, and utilize them to continue to allow Dublin to follow the path of success we have been on since 1982. 600

Application Questions
Why are you interested in serving on the Planning Commission? It’s a way to engage with our community and to have an Influence on Community Development. Planning commissions play a significant role in shaping the future of a community. Commissioners review land use, zoning changes, and development projects, which gives them a direct hand in how the community grows and develops. For someone passionate about urban planning or community growth, this is a powerful way to contribute.

What is your knowledge of and experience in Planning and Zoning? I have over 5 years in planning and zoning. In providing information to residents, developers, contractors, and city departments. In my day job, I manage and present entitlement projects to the Design Review Commission, Planning Commission, and the Zoning Administrator for a nearby city. Assignments include the planning and administration of land use controls, research, plan checks, and general customer service.

Assist with the administration of the City’s Zoning Code, Administrative Code and Municipal Code. I prepare and present oral and written reports and recommendations. Ability to communicate the zoning code and the municipal code in English and Spanish and provide alternative paths forward for potential projects. Respond to public inquiries via phone, email, or our front counter in a professional manner.

Do you have any experience in urban design, architecture or landscaping? If yes, please describe your experience.

I have over 5 years in urban design and architecture. In my day job, I manage and present entitlement projects to the Design Review Commission, Planning Commission, and the Zoning Administrator for a nearby city. Urban design and architecture should be compatible with the neighboring community. The materials should be durable and ensure the community’s safety.

What experience, if any, do you have serving on boards, commissions or task forces? Please explain.

Unfortunately, I don't have any experience serving on boards, commission or task forces.

How do you feel about making a decision for the overall good of the community, but unpopular with some neighbors? Making a decision that benefits the overall community but is unpopular with some neighbors is challenging. It requires a balance between serving the greater good and considering the concerns of individuals or groups. On one hand, focusing on the overall good means that you're prioritizing long-term benefits, such as improved infrastructure, economic growth, or environmental sustainability. These types of decisions are often necessary to ensure that the community as a whole thrives, even if they come with opposition. On the other hand, it’s natural to feel conflicted when neighbors or community members express concerns or resistance. Their feelings and perspectives are valid, and it’s important to listen to them, explain the reasoning behind decisions, and strive for compromise where possible. Ultimately, the key is to act with integrity and transparency.

How can the City better ensure that the viewpoints and perspectives of our diverse population are represented when making decisions about city planning?
Ensuring that the viewpoints and perspectives of a city’s diverse population are represented in city planning decisions requires intentional strategies to engage all community members. You can and should host community events before a project comes before the Planning Commission. Residents simply don’t have the time to come to Commission meetings so giving them another meeting option could prove helpful.

What is the most important contribution you can make as a member of the Planning Commission? The most important contribution I can make is ensure that I communicate with our community. Communication is not only speaking but listening to the concerns. In my 34 years of living in Dublin i always assumed the Planning Commission would approve any project and did not take the residents into account. I have over 5 years of land use, zoning, and urban design that I would love to bring to the City of Dublin. 604

From fitness classes and health screenings to social gatherings and educational workshops, the Senior Center fosters a sense of community and encourages active engagement.

Additionally, the support services available, such as transportation assistance, yoga and fitness sessions, nutritional programs, and access to resources for financial and legal support, help ensure that seniors have the tools they need to maintain independence and quality of life. The variety of programs allows seniors to find activities that match their interests, whether it’s arts and crafts, fitness, or social outings, which helps combat isolation and promotes a vibrant, connected community.

Overall, the Dublin Senior Center provides a valuable resource for seniors, and I believe it plays a vital role in supporting their overall well- being. However, there is always room for improvement, particularly in ensuring that the programs are accessible to all seniors, regardless of financial or physical limitations, and that the services evolve to meet the changing needs of the community. I would be excited to contribute to this important work on the Senior Center Advisory Committee.

Are there additional programs and services that should be offered through the Dublin Senior Center? Please describe.

While the Dublin Senior Center already offers a great array of programs and services, there are a few additional initiatives that could further enhance its impact and better meet the evolving needs of seniors in our community.

One area where expansion could be beneficial is in technology training. As many seniors are increasingly relying on technology for communication, banking, healthcare, and staying connected with family and friends, offering more structured courses on digital literacy and smartphone use would help bridge the digital divide. These could include basic tech skills classes, workshops on social media, and cybersecurity education to ensure seniors can navigate the digital world confidently and safely.

Additionally, a caregiver support program would be valuable. Many seniors are caregivers for spouses or family members, and supporting them with respite care options, resources, and emotional support groups could relieve some of the pressure they face. This could also include training programs that help caregivers manage the physical and emotional challenges that come with caregiving, ensuring that they have the tools and support they need.

Another potential addition is a mental health support program. As mental health becomes an increasingly important part of overall well- being, offering more targeted programs for seniors focused on managing stress, anxiety, and depression would be a great benefit. These could include group therapy sessions, mindfulness and meditation classes, and educational seminars on mental health issues that affect older adults.

Finally, expanding intergenerational programs could be an exciting opportunity. Encouraging interactions between seniors and younger generations can provide mutual benefits, such as mentorship, shared experiences, and a sense of purpose. Programs where seniors and youth collaborate on projects, share stories, or even assist with homework or skill-building would foster stronger connections within the community.

These suggestions, while enhancing existing programs, could also offer more comprehensive support for seniors, ensuring they remain What do you feel are some of the most pressing issues facing senior adults in the City of Dublin? social isolation and loneliness - challenging for seniors living alone or without strong family support. This can lead to emotional distress and mental health concerns. While the Senior Center offers a variety of programs, expanding outreach and creating more opportunities for seniors to stay connected with the community, both in-person and virtually, could help address this issue.

Access to affordable healthcare - is another significant concern for seniors. As they age, healthcare needs increase, and many seniors face difficulties accessing high-quality, affordable care. Navigating complex healthcare systems, understanding Medicare, and managing prescriptions can be overwhelming for many. Providing more resources, guidance, and education about healthcare options would be beneficial.

Transportation is also a challenge, especially for seniors who no longer drive. Although Dublin offers some transportation options, expanding reliable and affordable services for medical appointments, grocery shopping, and social activities would help ensure seniors remain independent and connected to essential services.

Affordable housing is a growing concern, with many seniors struggling to maintain stable housing as living costs rise. There is a need for more low-income housing options or senior-specific housing programs that would allow seniors to live independently without financial strain.

Financial security remains another critical issue for many seniors, particularly those relying on fixed incomes. Providing access to financial counseling, support for managing retirement savings, and resources to help with food and utility costs would alleviate some of these pressures. Additionally, offering more education on financial planning for retirement would help seniors make more informed decisions about their long-term financial health.

Health and wellness - are key areas that need more focus. While the Senior Center offers some physical fitness programs, expanding access to specialized classes for those dealing with chronic health issues, as well as offering preventative care services and health screenings, would support seniors' overall well-being.

Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach, involving city resources and partnerships with local organizations, to ensure that Dublin’s senior residents can age with dignity and remain active and engaged in the community. 618

What is your impression of the programs and services offered for seniors through the Dublin Senior Center? My impression of the programs and services offered at the Dublin Senior Center is that they are thoughtfully designed to promote the well- being, social engagement, and enrichment of Dublin’s senior community. The Center provides a wide variety of programs, from fitness classes and arts workshops to educational lectures and technology tutorials, which support seniors in staying active, learning new skills, and connecting with others.

In addition, the social activities offered—such as bingo, book clubs, and holiday celebrations—create a welcoming environment where seniors can build friendships and reduce isolation. I am also impressed by the Center’s focus on health and wellness, which includes resources like health screenings and wellness workshops that are essential for supporting seniors’ overall quality of life.

Overall, the Dublin Senior Center offers a well-rounded array of programs that reflect a genuine commitment to enhancing the lives of older adults. I am excited about the opportunity to support and contribute to these valuable services, helping ensure that every senior in Dublin has access to a vibrant and inclusive community
Have you or a family member participated in the programs, services, or events offered at the Dublin Senior Center? Yes, I always take my parents and my in-laws to Senior center.

Are there additional programs and services that should be offered through the Dublin Senior Center? Please describe.

While the Dublin Senior Center already offers a robust array of programs and services, there are a few areas where expansion could further enhance the quality of life for seniors. One area to explore could be mental health and mindfulness programs, such as guided meditation, stress-reduction workshops, or support groups for seniors experiencing isolation, grief, or anxiety. These programs could complement the existing wellness offerings by focusing on emotional health, which is just as important as physical health.

Additionally, intergenerational programs could be a valuable addition. These programs could involve collaborations with local schools or youth organizations, creating opportunities for seniors to mentor young people or share life skills, while providing youth with insights into history and community. This type of engagement could foster a deeper connection between generations and reduce age-related isolation.

Another consideration could be technology literacy classes, specifically tailored to help seniors better navigate modern communication tools, online resources, and social media platforms. This would empower them to stay connected with loved ones, access health services online, and explore new hobbies or interests in the digital space.

Lastly, transportation services or expanded options for seniors who may have mobility challenges could further enhance access to the Senior Center’s offerings and help ensure that all seniors can fully participate in the programs available to them.

By considering these additional services, the Dublin Senior Center can continue to be a supportive, inclusive, and vital resource for the senior community, addressing both their immediate and long-term needs.

What do you feel are some of the most pressing issues facing senior adults in the City of Dublin? Senior adults in the City of Dublin face several pressing issues, some of which are common across many communities, while others may be unique to our area. One of the most significant concerns is social isolation. As many seniors experience changes in family dynamics, mobility, or health, they may become disconnected from their communities. This isolation can lead to negative physical and mental health outcomes.

Expanding social programs, such as group activities, volunteer opportunities, and intergenerational events, can help address this issue.

Access to healthcare and wellness resources is another concern. Many seniors face challenges related to healthcare costs, transportation to medical appointments, and managing multiple health conditions. Providing more access to preventative care services, health screenings, and educational resources around aging-related health issues, as well as improving transportation options, could be valuable in supporting their needs.
624
Affordable housing is also a critical issue, especially as many seniors are on fixed incomes. The rising cost of living and limited affordable housing options in the Bay Area make it difficult for seniors to remain in their homes or find suitable living arrangements. Exploring ways to support affordable housing initiatives and ensuring that seniors have access to safe, appropriate housing can alleviate some of these pressures.

Finally, access to technology presents both challenges and opportunities. While many seniors benefit from the use of technology for staying in touch with loved ones and accessing resources, others may struggle with digital literacy. Offering more technology training programs or resources to help seniors navigate the digital world can empower them and enhance their independence.

By addressing these pressing issues, the City of Dublin can ensure that seniors continue to feel supported, connected, and active members of the community.

Why are you interested in serving on the Senior Center Advisory Committee? I want to serve on the Senior Center Advisory Committee because it is our responsibility as citizens to take care of everyone in our community, especially our elders. Many, while growing older, face physical challenges, and most often their children have gone off to 628
families of their own. This may provoke feelings of loneliness and deprivation of emotions. I strongly believe that we should give them love, care, and attention to their needs.

Each time I visit this senior center, it always brings a smile to my face, seeing those seniors who come for various reasons: social activities, health services, or just company. It is these moments that fill my desire to help make their lives better and be part of their happiness.

It would be my great honor to join in work regarding program development and services specific to the needs of our senior population and then advocate on behalf of those individuals.

Sewa Diwali:

Sewa Diwali is a non-profit organization designed to provide food and other items of basic needs to the less fortunate people, especially during the holiday seasons. It arranges drives for food, clothes, and other necessary items later on distributed among local food banks, schools, and community organizations. For the past couple of years, I have been privileged to be part of the organizing team to initiate these drives, mobilizing volunteers, and making sure the donations reach the correct recipient. It has indeed been very gratifying to see these efforts bear fruit within our community and make worthwhile contributions toward easing the hardships of others.

Silicon Andhra Manabadi:

Silicon Andhra Manabadi is a nonprofit, cultural organization committed to the promotion of Telugu language, literature, and Indian arts. A dedicated volunteer and teacher for more than five years, I have worked with children in teaching the rich cultural heritage of India. I try to incorporate fun lessons and activities that will help me appreciate Telugu traditions, its language, and its arts. Working with the organization has been very rewarding; I am constantly inspired by the children's enthusiasm and eagerness to learn.

What is your impression of the programs and services offered for seniors through the Dublin Senior Center? I'm impressed by the various programs and services currently being delivered at the Dublin Senior Center. The first point that impresses me most is that they have a monthly orientation program which is very welcoming for new members to help them become familiar with all the offerings available. This is an excellent way to make sure seniors are comfortable and well taken care of right from the start.

I also really like the idea of the Convenience Pass. That is a good way to save money for seniors who use services and activities through the center. This program adds another level of financial accessibility which is crucial for many older adults on fixed incomes.

I also highly commend the way in which the Senior Center works together with different organizations and community groups to provide services to enhance life for the elderly. It creates an interlocking web of care to make sure that seniors get what they need, whether it be meal services, social activities, or educational programs.

I also like the activities and games offered at the senior center. The senior center creates space for seniors to remain active, connected, and joyful.

There are still ways to improve to serve seniors better.

Have you or a family member participated in the programs, services, or events offered at the Dublin Senior Center? Currently, our family does not have any seniors, but I have taken the opportunity to visit the Senior Center and engage with the seniors who use its services. I spoke with several of them to gather their feedback on the programs and services offered, and I made sure to ask for their suggestions on what could be improved. Listening to their perspectives has given me valuable insight into how the center is meeting their needs and where there might be opportunities for growth or enhancement.

Are there additional programs and services that should be offered through the Dublin Senior Center? Please describe.

While the Dublin Senior Center already provides a variety of valuable programs and services, there are several supplemental services that could further enhance this center's capability to respond to the diverging needs of the senior community.

1. Health and Wellness Clinics:

Increasing access to regular health screenings or preventative health care services, such as blood pressure and cholesterol screenings, and memory assessments, might greatly facilitate the elderly in managing their health in a more successful way. Besides this, educational workshops regarding nutrition, fall prevention, and chronic disease management (diabetes, arthritis, etc.) will also help seniors be responsible for their health actions.

2. Caregiver Support Services:

The support programs for caregivers will surely lessen the burden of those attending to their elderly family members. These could be in the form of respite care, training for caregivers, or support groups where experiences and resources can be shared. Many caregivers also suffer emotional and physical burnout, and with this support system, they are not as lonely in their job. 629

3. Legal and Financial Counseling:

Many need assistance with legal or financial matters regarding estate planning, management of retirement savings, or options for health insurance. A partnership with local attorneys or financial advisors who could provide free or low-cost consultations on topics such as wills, power of attorney, and Medicare enrollment would be highly valued. Financial literacy workshops for seniors will also support them in navigating the complexities of budgeting on a fixed income.

4. Transportation Services:

Increasing transportation options would vastly improve the lives of those seniors unable to drive or without alternatives to public transportation. A dedicated shuttle service for medical appointments, grocery shopping, and social outings could greatly increase access for seniors in more remote areas or with mobility issues.

5. Home Safety and Modification Programs:

It would also be of great service if home safety assessments and assistance with home modifications were provided to seniors who wish to stay independent in their own homes for as long as possible. This may include counseling on simple modifications, such as installing grab bars, ramps, or better lighting, that can help prevent falls and enhance safety.

6. Social and Recreational Clubs:

More interest-based clubs in the form of book clubs, knitting groups, or gardening clubs will be greatly advisable for seniors since this will be a venue where they can take up hobby interests and socialize with similar-minded community members. This way, attempts will be made not to make them feel isolated but to develop camaraderie with their fellow community members.

7. Volunteer and Mentorship Opportunities:

Seniors generally bring much life experience and skills that would prove to be really beneficial to people. Mentorship programs or volunteer opportunities to allow seniors to give back to the community in effective ways, such as tutoring students, sharing one's skills with other people, or helping with events, may create a sense of purpose and fulfillment while benefitting society at large.

8. Memory Care and Cognitive Enrichment Programs:

With the increased rates of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, a consideration might include providing memory care programs and cognitive enrichment activities that specifically cater to seniors who are at an early stage of cognitive decline. These activities may be memory games, jigsaw puzzles, or some other brain-boosting activities that are meant to keep the mind sharp and provide mental stimulation in a supportive atmosphere.

These would make the Dublin Senior Center not just a more complete senior resource but help further create the center as a site of social connection, personal growth, and well-being.

What do you feel are some of the most pressing issues facing senior adults in the City of Dublin? While Dublin offers a range of services to its senior population, addressing the issues of social isolation, depression, affordable housing, access to healthcare, mobility challenges, and financial security are key areas that require attention. By investing in these critical areas and expanding the resources available to seniors, the city can improve the quality of life for older adults, enabling them to remain independent, healthy, and socially connected for as long as possible. 630

Why are you interested in serving on the Senior Center Advisory Committee? 633
I am a (young) senior myself 63 years old and my husband is 74 I am very interested in serving my community both Dubliners in general and older Dubliners in particular.

In what organizations are you currently a member? Please list.

AARP
What is your impression of the programs and services offered for seniors through the Dublin Senior Center? I think the programs are good, but can always be expanded. The provision of meals for seniors by Open Heart Kitchen is admirable and I think it is a good decision that that was moved back to in person dining. Various exercise and jazzercise line dance classes are also very good. I like that some classes are not just during the day but also early evening.

Have you or a family member participated in the programs, services, or events offered at the Dublin Senior Center? I have attended the line dance class and sadly my knee arthritis was too bad at the time to continue, otherwise I would have continued.

Are there additional programs and services that should be offered through the Dublin Senior Center? Please describe.

I would like to see some crafting, such as knitting and crocheting and sewing offered. I see those groups on Nextdoor regularly saying that they are meeting at Starbucks or Panera, but why not at the Senior Center? I would also like regular classes at the intersection of IT/internet, community integration and fraud prevention. The numbers of lonely seniors that fall victims to romance related fraud like cat fishing are staggering and those crimes ruin lives. I would love to see classes that teach seniors how to avoid ID fraud, phishing and catfishing. Related to fraud prevention is also the prevention of loneliness. Some of the current classes are great steps in providing socializing opportunities. I would like to see that even expanded.

What do you feel are some of the most pressing issues facing senior adults in the City of Dublin? The issues facing seniors in Dublin are probably not so different from seniors world wide. In many ways seniors in Dublin have great support with the lunch program, with medical facilities in the city, and of course we have amazing parks that offer opportunities for exercise, fresh air and sunlight. Worldwide however, particularly young people and seniors struggle with isolation and loneliness. In the US there are also particular population-wide health challenges that seem worse than elsewhere. I have personal experience with debilitating illness and am now very aware how challenging a walk in the park can be when one can only walk a few steps. Dublin is exemplary, but even in Dublin we could still improve a little with more awareness of making services available for people with health and mobility challenges to expand on availability for people of all abilities.

CITY COUNCIL

Agenda Item 8.6
DATE: December 17, 2024
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM: Colleen Tribby, City Manager
SUBJECT: City Council Committee Appointments and Assignments Prepared by: Marsha Moore, MMC, City Clerk
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Each member of the City Council represents the City of Dublin on various local and regional boards, committees, and commissions. The City Council will consider confirming the Mayor’s proposed appointments.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Adopt the Resolution Confirming the Mayor’s Appointments to Various Local and Regional Boards, Committees, and Commissions; and direct Staff to notify affected agencies, as appropriate.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None.

DESCRIPTION:

Individual members of the City Council represent the City of Dublin on various local and regional boards, committees, and commissions. A fully updated appointment list was last considered and approved in June 2024, following the resignation of former Mayor Hernandez and the appointment of Mayor McCorriston.

Not all organizations or committees meet on a regular basis. The following meet on an as-needed basis: Dublin San Ramon Services District Liaison Committee, Dublin Unified School District Liaison Committee, East Bay Regional Park District Liaison Committee, Pleasanton City Liaison Committee, San Ramon City Liaison Committee, and Zone 7 Liaison Committee. 639

Page 2 of 2 ends

Changes to the 2025 list are as follows:
 The Finance and Investment Committee, which was created by Resolution No. 120-24, was added to the list.
 The Livermore City Liaison Committee was removed from the list as a result of action taken by the Livermore City Council at their November 25, 2024 meeting to sunset the Committee.

This list does not include appointments to ad hoc committees, as those will be made through separate agenda items at the appropriate times.

In addition, this list does not include the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District. Under Health and Safety Code 2024(a), the City Council appoints a trustee to the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District for either two or four years. The Council has the discretion to choose the length of the term, but it cannot remove an appointed trustee at its pleasure. This is because, under Government Code section 56044, the appointees of independent special districts are appointed to “fixed terms.” As such, the appointed trustee serves until the end of their appointed term, unless removed for cause or if the office becomes vacant (e.g., resignation, disqualification).

In December 2023, Councilmember Qaadri was re-appointed to the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District for a four-year term starting in January 2024.

STRATEGIC PLAN INITIATIVE:

Agenda Item 8.7
DATE: December 17, 2024
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Councilmembers
FROM: Colleen Tribby, City Manager
SUBJECT: Appointment of City of Dublin Historian and Poet Laureate Prepared by: Shaun Chilkotowsky, Parks & Community Services Manager EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

The City Council will consider the appointment of a City of Dublin Historian to a term from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2028, and Poet Laureate for a term from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Confirm the Mayor’s appointment of Steve Minniear to the position of City of Dublin Historian and Richard Deets to the position of City of Dublin Poet Laureate.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None.

DESCRIPTION:

In 2007, the City Council approved the creation of the honorary volunteer positions of City Historian and Poet Laureate, with the first volunteers appointed to the positions in 2008. The City Historian serves a four-year term, and the Poet Laureate serves a two-year term.

The current term for both positions are slated to expire on December 31, 2024. Staff recruited for the positions beginning September 20, 2024. The recruitment for these positions closed on October 20, 2024, with one qualifying application received for each position.

On November 14, 2024, the Heritage and Cultural Arts Commission (HCAC) reviewed the applications and invited each applicant to make a statement on why they should be selected for the position. Following deliberation, the HCAC voted to recommend to the Mayor that Steve Minniear be reappointed as City Historian for another four-year term from January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2028. The HCAC also voted to recommend that Richard Deets be appointed as the 643

Sub
ject: Application for Dublin’s Historian
Dear
Mayor,
I ap
preciate being the Dublin Historian and I have accomplished much. It would be an honor to serve another four years and make more progress promoting our community’s history.

Sinc
e I moved to Dublin in 1990, the rich and varied history of this community has fascinated me. In my four years as Dublin Historian, I completed efforts to research, document, interpret and promote Dublin’s history through presentations, articles, videos, social media posts, and books. I estimate my efforts reached several thousand people. And I have had the distinct pleasure to collaborate with other local historians, local civic groups, and the Dublin Unified School District in researching and promoting our community story. Enclosed is a list of presentations and publications. I would love the opportunity to continue this work.

Du
blin’s history is not over. In fact, it is still being made. If I am selected as the City of Dublin Historian, I would propose two projects to address immediately. First, Dublin needs an actual, physical space to routinely engage the public with our community history. During my appointment I worked with City and Dublin Library staff to create a local history room into the Dublin Library expansion space. Having a space, staffed by volunteers, easily available to the public and holding physical and digital historical information will:
• Prov
ide students a place to research and ask questions from knowledgeable people for school history projects;
• Allow residents to tell, record, and document their experiences with our ever-developing community; and
• Enable researchers to collect, store and share local history sources, such as books, newspaper articles, scrap books, publications, and images.

Th
e City and the Library are finalizing plans for the construction of a local history room in the library expansion space. It is important to finish the work and put together the best local history resources in Dublin and the Tri-Valley.

Sec
ondly, now is the time to continue to collect artifacts and stories about Dublin’s second pioneer period: the 1960s through the 1980s. It was the period Dublin evolved from a tiny little crossroads farming community to a bustling suburban city. Over 60 years have passed since that evolution of Dublin; as more time passes, we lose those Attachment 1

modern pioneer’s stories, as well as the physical structures, houses, and businesses that we built during that time.

Than
k you for considering my reapplication for Dublin historian. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me ( ).

• His poem, “I Hear Peace” was recently featured at the 50th Anniversary of the Texas International Pop Festival (“Woodstock of the West”) in Lewisville, Texas • Richard’s poem, “Water, Water Everywhere” was featured at the Red River Unitarian Universalist Church’s Celebration of Water in Denton, Texas. • His poem, “Chritina’s Courage” is required reading in the Delhi University English Department Disabilities Studies graduate program. • Richard’s poem, “We Sailed on With Happy Hearts” was the International Society of Poets 2008 Grand Prize-Winning Poem.

As a long time Dublin resident, I have always appreciated Dublin as a story of a Ohlone communoty that has grown into a global community welcoming people of diverse backgrounds, resulting in substantial economic growth and civic pride. If chosen as the next Dublin Poet Laureate, I would be an advocate for the appreciation and advancement of poetry in classrooms and public spaces; continue in the steps of James Morehead and previous Dublin Poet Laureates in building a community of local poets, and bring the City of Dublin’s unique culture to life through the power of both the spoken word and the written word.

Autumn Collage

Autumn bounced summer’s hot red ball to next year.

All at once, summer collapsed into autumn.

The days oh so short, nights so quick to flee.

Morning sun pours in like honey to greet
A br
and - new November day - it’s a gift!
The crescent moon hangs like a waning silver
Bowl in early morning skies as horned larks
Call chirping from edges of river shallows.

Gath
ering swallows twitter in the skies
And raptors in migration Uber song birds
Soaring high on wings of autumnal winds.

Predators fly next to tiny warblers
Th
ey would eat in a different season.

Gabbling geese fly in formation as rainbow
Altocumulus clouds touch vast mustard
Wavery stubble meadows with a rosy hue.

Ro
adside fiery trees hold onto their last
Leaves, red and gold, in the final few months
Of this unfinished year. Hairy woodpecker
Drills and drums into a red oak branch dropping
Ac
orns in puddle notes singing in the rains.

Robins whistle new songs from the orchard
Where trees bend; apples ripe to the core
Drop for blackbirds and waxwings in autumn.

Th
e year’s last loveliest smile when everything
Bursts with its last beauty, as if nature
Herself had been saving up all year for
this fiery spectacular grand finale.

a piece of poetry relating to disability.

We were in Chadds Ford and talked of Wyeth art,
Timeless as Brandywine Valley landscapes.

We weighed the mystery of Christina's courage
Rising above the crippling curse of polio.

Mid-
March chills encroached upon the evening hour.

Then the wind battered shutters and bent
Daffodils and chickweed, and rain
Splashed the riverward windows. We romanticized ourselves Wi
th memories as children bicycling winding country roads Over rolling hills dropping into sleepy valleys,
Your flaming auburn hair was always beyond reach.

Suddenly rain showers slowed to a quiet drizzle.

Th

I stood in the cottage entry drying forearm crutches,
and turned to see you drooping in your wheelchair, staring stainless Braces stacked in night shadows as if searching for the child Par
alysis free, I watched a tear round your pale cheek and fall.

And what of the spring day remained? A Norfolk Southern freight Whistle faded northward and the courage of Christina,
Which we had discussed, appeared out of reach in the rain.
