Ruben Abrica, Alcalde

PROCLAMATION OF THE CITY OF EAST PALO ALTO IN RECOGNITION & CELEBRATION OF THE CINCO DE MAYO FESTIVAL LATINO 2022 AND EXTENDING CONGRATULATIONS TO THE COMITE LATINO FOR ORGANIZING EVENT SINCE 1985
Whereas, during the Cinco de Mayo festivities people of Mexican descent celebrate their contribution to American society and join other Latinas/os in affirming their culture, history and aspirations for fairness and justice for the Latinx community and for all people in the United States and the world; and Whereas, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla on the 5th of May 1862 and Mexico’s and the American continent's struggles for selfdetermination and democracy against colonial powers and slave societies during the XIX century; and Whereas, the Comite Latino, an all-volunteer organization founded in 1981 has organized cultural events, and notably the festival Latino since 1985 and has brought pride and recognition to the city of east palo alto, establishing the festival and the international parade as a regional cultural event in the peninsula and bay area, attended by thousands of people; and
Whereas, the 2022 festival Latino Cinco de Mayo marks the 37th anniversary of this public and family oriented celebration (cancelled only twice for major reasons) and will be virtual this year as precaution and transmitted via Midpen Media Center on Thursday May 5 at 6 PM on channel 30 cable; and Whereas, the pandemic has exposed racist oppression and the deep inequities that have magnified the suffering of humanity and in particular have impacted the poor, the undocumented immigrant community, people of color, women, those with chronic illnesses and other vulnerable populations around the world; and
Whereas, the virtual event's program is a celebration of life and culture and also a remembrance of those who have passed and is a call to the community to get fully vaccinated, use masks as necessary and continue with precautions to avoid infections from variants of COVID-19; and Whereas, Comite Latino likewise calls on the Latina/o community to defend their rights as human beings, and to work in solidarity with other communities in order to rebuild a society post pandemic that treats the issues of economic inequities more seriously, as well as in health, education, housing, jobs, and other areas of daily life, thus maintaining the historic meaning of the Cinco de Mayo; and Now therefore, be it resolved that I, Ruben Abrica, Mayor, along with the East Palo Alto city council hereby recognize and celebrate the 2022 Cinco de Mayo Festival Latino and we congratulate Comite Latino for continuing this community tradition in East Palo alto and the Bay Area
