BACKGROUND:

Soroptimist International of El Centro, founded in 1940, has been empowering women and girls in the Imperial Valley for over 80 years. As part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, they share a global mission: to provide women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment and support one another, especially those facing significant obstacles.

Through scholarships, mentorship, and career exploration programs — including their signature, Live Your Dream Awards, Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls, and the STEAM WARS & Beyond Conference.

DISCUSSION:

In January 2025, STEAM WARS & Beyond launched across Imperial Valley, inspiring local high school girls to build confidence, ambition, and interest in STEM careers. The success of this event sparked STEAM WARS & Beyond, a year-round series to follow-up workshops to keep the momentum going. The 2nd Annual STEAM WARS & Beyond is scheduled to take place on January 24, 2026, at Central Union High School STEM Building.

This education conference empowers girls ages 11–18 to explore career pathways in science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics, and related fields. This program connects students with mentors, hands-on workshops, and real-world career exposure, helping build confidence, leadership skills, and future-ready aspirations. This conference is free and open to the public. The program not only benefits the students and residents of El Centro, but Imperial Valley residents by providing a high-impact educational experience.
