City Council Special Meeting Minutes of February 16, 2022

Jane Myring – Interested in knowing how the redistricting will impact El Monte since some neighborhoods have a lot of apartments and some areas are single family homes.

Mary Ann Powers – Are registered voters being considered. Concerned with areas with 5% voters vs. 50% voters. Concerned that there may be areas that have very low voter registration.

Charles Hoffman – Who will be voting for these maps? Will the residents vote in November or will the City Council?

Florencio Briones – Will the City Council adopt the final set of maps? Will that be the end of it or is it like the school districts where it goes to another commission/county to approve?

Gabriel Panduro – There will be more representation if the City moves into districts.

The main point is there is a protected class if there are more Councilmembers it would be good to consider the protected class. For the next meeting when maps are being considered it would be good to have an outline for residents to consider.

It would be important to clarify to the voters that the boundaries formed when the City goes to district elections is that it doesn’t mean that the voters can’t go to other areas or districts. Can everyone vote on citywide initiatives?
