PLEASE STATE THE REASON(S) YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE, AND YOUR QUALIFICATION(S) TO BE, A MEMBER OF THIS COMMISSION:

I have a professional and educational background in architecture, planning and landscape restoration. I worked at the County of Sacramento as Assistant Planner and understand the local codes and ordinances. I am an active community volunteer and it would be an honor to serve the members of my Elk Grove community (additional information in the attached letter).

HAVE YOU SERVED ON AN ADVISORY GROUP BEFORE? IF YES,
PLEASE EXPLAIN:

While working at the County of Sacramento as Assistant Planner, after the design review process and decisions made during DRAC (design review advisory committee) meeting, I would review the landscape and irrigation plans to check for their compliance with the County code, ordinance, general plan, conditions of approval and water conservation ordinance (MWELO). I gave advise to the applicants on the projects and also signed off permits.

City of Elk Grove
8401 Laguna Palms Way
Elk Grove, CA 95758

Respected Mayor Bobby Singh-Allen,

It is my pleasure to apply for the position in the Planning Commission. I would like to give a brief background about my professional education and experience, and highlight areas that I believe, make me a superior candidate for this position.

I currently work as a Landscape Designer at AECOM and prior to joining AECOM, I worked for the County of Sacramento, Dept. of Planning and Environmental Review as Assistant Planner/ Assistant Landscape Architect. At the County, I reviewed landscape and irrigations plans to check for their compliance with the zoning code, general plan, CEQA, NEPA and Model Water Efficient Landscape Ordinance. I participated in all the stages of planning and design, from initial design review till the final issuance of certificate of completion.

I have a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture and a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. My passion for the community of Elk Grove, my interest in social and environmental justice issues and authentic citizen participation has motivated me to apply for this position. I would like to add the for my master’s thesis project, I studied two public parks in New York City (Manhattan and Bronx borough) to analyze the authenticity of public participation in the design of these parks. I independently interviewed government officials, residents and members of nonprofit organizations. In addition, I am active volunteer in the Elk Grove community. I have participated in several fundraising events for nonprofit organizations such as Chicks in Crisis. I volunteer my time and use my technical expertise to educate the residents of Elk Grove about the benefits of switching to water conserving landscape. I also activity volunteer at Elk Grove Teeyaan festival and at the temple.

I believe, I have the technical skills, experience and above all, passion to be a member of the Planning Commission. It be my honor to serve the community of Elk Grove! Sincerely Yours,
Superna D. Mehta
