Good evening,

I would like to find out if a written statement is something that I can provide in lieu of the public comment for this Wednesday's meeting.

I have a work commitment that evening.

Normally I am available for meetings on Wednesday evenings, but this is a rare exception.

Please let me know and I will provide one to your office by Monday.

Thank you in advance for your consideration,

Blondell Chism

By sending us an email (electronic mail message) or filling out a web form, you are sending us personal information (i.e. your name, address, email address or other information). We store this information in order to respond to or process your request or otherwise resolve the subject matter of your submission.

Certain information that you provide us is subject to disclosure under the California Public Records Act or other legal requirements. This means that if it is specifically requested by a member of the public, we are required to provide the information to the person requesting it. We may share personally identifying information with other City of Elk Grove departments or agencies in order to respond to your request. In some circumstances we also may be required by law to disclose information in accordance with the California Public Records Act or other legal requirements.

This letter is to be read at the meeting of the Elk Grove City Council on January 25, 2023 during the portion of the agenda about an appointment of a member to the Diversity and Inclusion Commission as a substitute for my presence. My lack of presence should not be taken as lack of commitment.

I would like to address the three tenets of Education/Promotion, being an Ambassador, and providing Council feedback.

Education/Promotion:

I believe that there is a need for continuous learning and education around diversity and what that truly means. The educational opportunities continue to grow in our city as we expand and welcome our diverse population. There is not only the need to learn about one another to decrease the bias that exists but there is also the need to understand and become allies to one another. This can be done through cultural observances, books, movie nights and just time spent together doing community outreach. One of the main things we can start to look at is more promotion of the cultural observances throughout the entire year and highlight our diverse and rich community.

Ambassador:

To be an Ambassador of this commission we should be present at the City events and council meetings to seek feedback and understanding from our community with the main purpose to discover and/or promote ways to support our City members so that they will be better able to assure that our community can work to eliminate discrimination, exclusion and bias.

One of the ways to be an Ambassador is to have a true presence throughout the City. This would require a dedicated and coordinated effort, but it would really bring light to the needs of our diverse community. I truly support the idea of this is “No Place For Hate” Council Feedback:

This means bi-directional feedback. It is giving recommendations to the City Council and also providing some events and activities that are needed and relevant for the diverse community.

Given the roles described for the members of the commission, the feedback might also include addressing social injustices that come about given the current climate in our country that in inevitably going to trickle down to the City. The way to address this may include gatherings, meetings, or for those things that impact a larger group perhaps putting together a forum/town hall for people to be able to share their concerns.

In conclusion, as a resident in Elk Grove, living here for the last 18 years, I am intimately aware of the need to select a member to this commission who is willing to dig in and do the promotion/education, be an ambassador, and to provide feedback that is not always easy. I am happy to put myself forward for this role.

Thank you for your consideration,
Blondell Chism

Dear City Council Members,

There is an old saying, “If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem”. My name is Dr. Martha Burnett-Collins and I want to apply for a seat on the Diversity and Inclusion Commission. I want to be part of the solution on making Elk Grove a destination city! My family and I have been residents of Elk Grove for over 30 years. My children are graduates of Elk Grove high school, CSUS and my youngest has an MBA from the University of Michigan Ross school of business. All three are educated, successful young people and they are a sons and daughters of Elk Grove, CA.

As a retired Optometrist, military officer and a woman of color, I bring a perspective to the table second to none. For example, when I would see a new patient, I had to make them feel comfortable by embracing their culture, sometimes performing the exam in Spanish for the Spanish speaking patients, diagnose the problem and offer a solution in twenty minutes. I am used to zeroing in on a problem and coming up with a solution. In the military, I learned how to lead troops out of harms way and had to gain their trust, immediately. I am also a team player. I believe we all win when we are willing to give up something for the good of the whole.

If chosen for this seat, I will be dedicated to the success of the committee, on time and will have excellent attendance. I come from the background where your word is your bond. You can depend on me.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to meet with me to further get to know each other.

Sincerely willing to serve,

Dr. Martha D. Burnett-Collins, OD

HOW WILL YOU BE A DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION AMBASSADOR?
The work of a Diversity and Inclusion Ambassador should be intersectional, with the understanding that every potential underrepresented group deserves to be spoken for. Support and advocacy for each underrepresented group should be radical and unwavering. Nobody counts until everybody counts. I practice this kind of radical acceptance and unwavering advocacy on a daily basis, both as a registered nurse and as the parent of a disabled child, and am fully confident that I would continue this work as a Diversi ty and Inclusion Ambassador for my community.

HAVE YOU SERVED ON AN ADVISORY GROUP BEFORE? IF YES, PLEASE EXPLAIN:

IF APPOINTED, WILL YOU BE ABLE TO ATTEND MEETINGS REGULARLY AND DEVOTE THE TIME NECESSARY TO FULFILL YOUR DUTIES AS A MEMBER?
I am fully prepared to attend at least 70% of meetings. I have very flexible work schedule and wonderful family support to provide childcare as needed.

DO YOU OR IMMEDIATE FAMILY MEMBERS HAVE ANY RELATIONSHIP (PROFESSIONAL, FINANCIAL, OTHER) THAT MAY PRESENT A POTENTIAL CONFLICT OF INTEREST FOR THIS ADVISORY GROUP? ____ YES _X_ NO IF YES, PLEASE EXPLAIN:

IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE CITY COUNCIL RELATED TO YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION, AND/OR SOCIAL JUSTICE? As the child of a same-sex couple and the parent of a disabled child, I have lifelong personal experience with diversity and the need for equity, inclusion, and social justice. I am deeply passionate about my role as an advocate for inclusion and equity, especially within the disabled community. I love where we live, but I feel strongly that, in terms of equity and inclusion (especially for the disabled community), there is much room for improvement in the City of Elk Grove, and would love the opportunity to be part of the solution.

RE: Diversity and Inclusion Commission

To whom it may concern:

I'm applying for the Diversity and Inclusion Commission.

In my position as the Assistant to the President of SEIU Local 1000, I worked with our various Human Rights committees, they were The API Committee, African American Committee, LGBTQ Committee, and many more. This work was most rewarding to me because it was a great way to learn about and gain appreciation for other cultures and work with groups of dynamic, talented individuals. As a member of the Community Power group, we organized a “Shower Day” for the unhoused, worked with loaves & fishes and ran some community outreach “feeds”.

Elk Grove, and the Region as a whole, are among the country's most diverse areas. I look forward to working and serving on the Diversity and Inclusion Commission.

I have effective communication skills and the motivation to take on challenging work. I am confident that I have the drive, knowledge and experience you need.

Sincerely,
Brandi Lopes
