About the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music
As a recipient of the City of Oakland’s Cultural Key to the City, the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music has been committed to the preservation of African American history and culture through music education for more than a decade. Founded in 2005, the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music (OPC) is a model to be replicated in other cities with large under-resourced and under-served African American and other communities of color who do not have access to rigorous music education.
OPC’s programs celebrate, preserve and extend the artistic heritage of the people of Oakland and the broader Bay Area by providing access to shared and diverse musical genres grounded in the African American Experience, with an understanding of its role in the development of American music and culture. Its programs are designed to foster learning for people of all ages.
OPC is dedicated to providing affordable world-class musical experiences. As a community music education institution, OPC serves as a gathering place for rehearsals, youth and adult classes, concerts, seminars, film screenings, and community celebrations. Music education programs include after-school Preparatory Studies in Music, Summer Music Academy, OPC-SFJAZZ Academy, Recording and Production Academy, the pre-professional Frederick Douglas Youth Ensemble, Black Girls Play, and Community Music Workshops for adults.
OPC is dedicated to ensuring access to master musicians and offers low to no cost Master Classes and Workshops. Past masterclasses and concerts include: members of the Count Basie Orchestra, Carl Allen-Jazz Drumming Master, NEA Jazz masters Slide Hampton and Steve Turre, Zimbabwean marimba master Ronnie Daliyo, Afro-Peruvian master percussionist, National Treasure of Peru-Juan Medrano Cotito, Rhiannon Giddens-MacArthur Foundation Genius Award Recipient (2017) and Dom Flemons, co-founders of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, and celebrated Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira, among others.
OPC has been featured in several local publications, touting the success of its programs and initiatives. OPC and its Founder Angela Wellman have been featured in articles in the East Bay Express, San Francisco Examiner, the Oakland Tribune, and Oakland Magazine. The organization was recognized by the West Coast Blues Hall of Fame Awards as the “Best Non-Profit of the Year.” In 2016, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff presented Wellman with the Cultural Key to the City and Wellman was recently honored with the “2018 Jazz Hero Award” by the Jazz Journalists Association.
