Electricity Accounts Will Transition to 100% Renewable Energy in March 2022.
To help achieve its Climate Action Plan goals, the City of Berkeley receives its electricity from East Bay Community Energy (EBCE), a local energy provider supplying greener electricity to the East Bay community. Since 2018 EBCE has been the default supplier of electric generation service for all residential and commercial accounts in Berkeley, including yours. Our records indicate that you had previously selected EBCE’s Brilliant 100 service, which was terminated as a customer option at the end of 2021. At that time, you were moved from EBCE’s Brilliant 100 service to EBCE’s Bright Choice service.
In March 2022, most Berkeley residents, including your account, will default to 100% renewable energy available through EBCE.
In June 2021, the Berkeley City Council voted to set the default electricity option for Berkeley residents to EBCE’s Renewable 100 service starting in March 2022. Renewable 100 service is sourced from California wind and solar facilities including EBCE’s new 57.5 megawatt wind farm in Livermore, and costs an additional 1 cent per kilowatt-hour above PG&E rates—that’s about $5 more per month for a typical home. Commercial customers in Berkeley will be placed on Renewable 100 in October 2022.
EBCE also offers their Bright Choice service, which is priced 1% below PG&E rates and is approximately 5% more renewable energy than PG&E. Customers who prefer to power their home with Bright Choice are welcome to do so by visiting ebce.org/berkeley and clicking on “Remain on Bright Choice,” or by calling 1-833-699-EBCE (3223) during business hours (9AM–5PM on weekdays). Take action by February 22 if you prefer to avoid automatic enrollment in Renewable 100. Customers who participate in CARE, FERA, and Medical Baseline programs will remain on Bright Choice service automatically. Customers can change their EBCE service or return to PG&E service anytime.
EBCE will be hosting a series of webinars to review the basics about their service, and to answer any questions. Details are available at ebce.org/berkeley.

You may have heard about Berkeley transitioning to renewable energy, but this will not impact your bill.
In 2016, the Berkeley City Council approved joining the not-for-profit local power agency East Bay Community Energy (EBCE) as the default provider of electric generation service for all electricity accounts in Berkeley. EBCE began serving residential, business, and municipal electricity customers throughout Berkeley in 2018. Customers, including you, were placed on EBCE’s Bright Choice service, which is priced 1% below PG&E’s standard rates and includes approximately 5% more renewable energy than PG&E’s power mix.
In June 2021, the Berkeley City Council voted to set the default electricity option for most Berkeley residents to EBCE’s Renewable 100 service starting in March 2022. Renewable 100 service is sourced from California wind and solar facilities, including a new wind farm in Livermore. Renewable 100 costs an additional 1 cent per kilowatt-hour above PG&E rates. That’s about $5 more per month for a typical Berkeley home. Commercial customers in Berkeley will be placed on Renewable 100 in October 2022.
As a current EBCE customer and participant in a customer discount program (such as CARE, FERA, and/or Medical Baseline), you will not be automatically placed on Renewable 100 service. You will continue to receive your discounts through these programs, as well as receiving EBCE’s additional 1% Bright Choice discount each month.
This is a courtesy notice, you do not need to take action to continue receiving your discounts.
If you prefer to enroll in Renewable 100 you are welcome to do so by visiting ebce.org/change-my-plan and clicking on “Choose Renewable 100,” or by calling 1-833-699-EBCE (3223) during business hours (9AM–5PM on weekdays). Customers can change their EBCE service or return to PG&E service anytime. For more information please visit ebce.org/berkeley.
