Description of Proposed Public Improvements for 1550 EmeryStation Project Revised Discussion Draft – 3/21/22
1. Construction of Portland cement barriers for bicycle lanes along both sides of Horton from Powell to the intersection of 62nd Street.
2. Creation of a 3-way stop at the intersection of Horton and 62nd, along with a crosswalk across 62nd.
3. Creation of a two-way, barrier protected bicycle lane on the north side of 62nd, from Hollis to Overland. This 2 way bicycle lane would extend to Overland northbound and extend up to 63rd.
4. Overland between 63rd and 64th would become a public linear park, with retractable bollards and a 20 ft wide asphalt surface for emergency vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. Preliminary design concepts have been developed for this space with landscaping, trees and special pavement treatment. It may include a path that is not linear (meandering), with permanent street art or other decorative pavement features.
The key here is to create a space where people can stop for a break or as part of a journey. Activation features could include game tables, benches, sculptures to climb on, exercise equipment, etc. A public bike repair station could also be included. In addition, there is vision of planted trees along each edge that would grow into a “kissing canopy” across Overland to shade users and provide a landmark.
5. Wareham has suggested that they would sponsor a public child and/or adult “chalk art” contest at the park once or twice a year.
6. Overland at 63rd Street would become one way southbound to 62 nd (left turn required.)
Vehicles would be able to turn left onto 62nd, stop at the intersection of Horton/62nd and continue on to the signalized intersection at Hollis.
7. Notes:
• On-street parking will remain on the south side of 62nd Street. • Potential design issue with the current plan for sidewalk, planting and curb improvements at the southwest corner of the new building and along Overland; needs to be resolved.
• Openings for drainage, driveways and provisions for loading zones would need to be worked out.
• On-street parking along the east side of Overland would be eliminated.
