Why are you interested in serving on this Board, Commission or Committee? I am interested in helping to steer Emeryville toward a greener, denser, more accessible and equitable future.

I see us as a city overlooked by our much more famous neighboring municipalities that has all the potential it needs to become a regional destination and an even more enviable place to live and work. I want to do work that is looking well into the future, and that is what the Planning Commission does.

PLANNING COMMISSION APPLICANTS ONLY
Please provide a short (300 words or less) statement discussing your ideas and attitudes about planning in Emeryville. Please consider issues such as traffic, industrial and commercial development density, affordable housing, maintaining community diversity and jobs/housing balance.

Emeryville is a city that has a traffic interchange as a crest. Previous generations of planning at different levels of government have made us a driving destination for big-box retail, a traffic thoroughfare, and a city divorced from its natural waterfront in the service of a better view for traffic. Yet the city has been fighting against this car-choked reality, and in the time I have been here I have seen not only progress in where we are but where we're going. As a commissioner I want to plan for the inevitable future of Emeryville where we are connected to Berkeley, Oakland, and San Francisco by a safe and comfortable bike network and a reliable and fast transit network. As part of this urban fabric, the reality of our future is dense. But without continuous effort toward enhancing means of transport in and out of our community other than cars, it will continue to be difficult to convince developers to bring less parking, and people to bring fewer cars. Without continuous effort to provide an array of equitable housing options, we will have failed our social duty as well as failed to build a truly diverse community. And without pushing and prodding developments to fit our community well, we will fail to convince people that density will improve their neighborhoods. I want to see a lot more of Emeryville: more residents, more jobs, more visitors. But the context of this growth is a city that is choked by traffic and a region with internationally famous inequality. These problems were created over decades by people who didn't look far enough ahead. They will take decades to fix by people who do.
